“I cannot recommend Professor Field enough; if you are facing the prospect of surgery I cannot overstate the support and care that I had throughout the whole process from first meeting to post-operative attention and support. Professor Field is clear about every aspect of the procedure and process, is very easy to talk to and obviously cares. I cannot imagine that many people leave a first consultation 'on a high' after being told they require a double hip replacement, but from that point on I felt cared for and considered throughout. It was most reassuring. Care immediately pre-surgery and post was equally attentive. I am now quite a a few months on from surgery and feel ten years younger than I did pre-surgery.“

    About

Richard Field is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in Hip and Knee surgery. He is the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, St George's University of London. His NHS clinical practice is undertaken at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) where he has been the Director of Research since 2004. His Private Practice is undertaken at The Lister Hospital in Chelsea, at Spire St Anthony's Hospital in Cheam, Surrey and now also at SWLEOC.

Prof Field is the UK's most experienced surgeon in Direct Anterior (minimally invasive, muscle sparing) Hip Replacement and has been using this approach since 2008. He uses the standard longitudinal and the less visible, bikini incisions, as appropriate. He lectures internationally on both hip and knee surgery and has operated with surgeons in more than ten countries. He is a pioneer of Arthroscopic Hip surgery and was the President of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA - www.ISHA.net) in 2017. He was the first surgeon in the London area to adopt hip resurfacing and continues to use the Birmingham Resurfacing Hip (BHR) in selected patients. Prof Field has been actively involved in the design and evaluation of new implant designs since 1983. He is currently undertaking clinical studies on short femoral stem implants as well as some of the new generation of hip resurfacing designs and knee replacements that more closely reproduce the natural knee joint's movement. He uses patient specific custom cutting blocks to achieve optimal component alignment, where possible. Patients wishing to be considered for inclusion in studies on new implants may need to be treated at SWLEOC.

Prof Field completed his medical training at the Westminster Hospital in 1980 and went on to hold positions at a number of hospitals across London, including St Stephen's Hospital, University College Hospital, and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. After being awarded a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1988, he continued to his specialist training in Orthopaedics in London, Cambridge and Melbourne. He was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at St Helier Hospital, Surrey in 1994. Over the past 25 years, he has gained enormous experience in complex sports and developmental related hip problems and is a world leader in hip preservation and rapid recovery hip replacement surgery.  He continues to undertake over 300 hip operations per year. He has previously been an adviser to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Prof Field is an excellent surgeon. I have just had a double hip replacement and 9 days post-op I am practically able to walk unaided. My recovery has been exceptional. I put that down to his expertise in performing the operation, and perhaps my determination to religiously follow the advice of my surgeon and the post-op physio team in performing the daily strengthening exercises. I received world class care and attention throughout and would recommend him to anyone needing a hip replacement.

From my first meeting with Professor Field I was confident that I wanted him to complete my Hip Operation. He is clearly a man who loves what he does, is a consummate professional and at the very top of his game in terms of capability and innovation. He explained the process of the operation, the various steps that needed to be taken and the likely recovery process. He also outlined the risks associated with such an operation. At all times I was reassured and could not wait to be relieved of the pain in my hip joint which had so much impacted my daily way of life. Post Op and whilst a little uncomfortable I am not really in any measurable pain and so much less than before the operation. Feel that I will soon be able to dispense with my sticks and start to walk around limp and pain free. Professor Field - a fantastic man who spends his time giving people their lives back - Thank You.

    Anterior Hip Replacement
I was reluctant to have surgery in 2020 for obvious reasons, but my minimally invasive right hip replacement performed by Professor Field was the best decision I have made. He suggested in an initial consultation that 6 months after surgery I would have forgotten I ever needed a hip replacement - and I can honestly say that I felt like that after 6 weeks. I was dubious about returning home from hospital just 24 hours after surgery, but it was absolutely the right thing. He knows best! Professor Field explained everything so clearly and was always ready to listen and answer any concerns. I know I owe the success of my surgery and rapid recovery to Professor Field. He is simply the best.

Simply the best surgeon in his field . ( pardon the pun ) thanks to a recommendation from a friend who was his patient. From the first moment of consultation I felt at ease I had no doubt from the beginning with his expertise and care I would come through a different person physically I’m happy to say 9 weeks on from a double hip replacement , I can now walk with ease, no more pain , flexibility ! It’s wonderful and makes me feel so much better about myself , I just smile! Thank you Prof Field .

I have met several medical doctors and professors over the last ten months. Prof Field was by far the most rounded in his approach. He was extremely well prepared for our first meeting and had gone beyond his field of specialism to give me his opinion on how to go about finding a solution for my issue. He was warm and engaging. I could not recommend him more to anyone seeking a first or second opinion.

Professor Field was absolutely charming and, better than that, he explained the results of first, an X-ray then an MRI scan in detail and without being in the slightest bit condescending. I therefore now understand what my medical problem is, and what can potentially be done about it. It is such a relief to be treated as a sentient adult by someone who is clearly eminent in his field. He took time and effort to make sure I understood the situation.

I was recommended Professor Field by a friend who underwent hip replacement and was home the next day. My own recent experience has not disappointed. I cannot believe I spent one night in hospital and am now home walking around not needing any pain relief. I am blown away by the level of expertise and care shown to me by Professor Field. Thank you to you and your team.

Far, far better than expected. Only a day in hospital. 2 days post operation, no pain, no painkillers and able to walk with one crutch only - or none at all. Wish I had had the operation earlier.

Prof Field is an internationally renowned expert on the anterior approach to the hip. I have looked after a number of patients who have seen Prof Field for their hip surgery and they all eulogise about the care and treatments they have received under Prof's team. We share an anaesthetist, secretary and theatre team and cross refer patients.
