    About

Prof. Kefah Mokbel is an internationally renowned breast cancer surgeon and researcher who specialises in the multidisciplinary care of patients with breast cancer. He is the lead oncoplastic breast surgeon at the London Breast Institute.

Following the completion of his undergraduate medical education in 1990 at the London Hospital Medical College (now known as Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London), Prof. Mokbel went on to pursue surgical training at the Royal Marsden, Charing Cross, Chelsea and Westminster, Saint Mary’s and St. Bartholomew’s hospitals, completing his higher surgical training as an oncoplastic breast surgeon in 2000. Over the years, Prof. Mokbel has won an impressive array of prestigious prizes, awards and honours during his education, training and postgraduate surgical career.

He qualified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS, England) in 1994 and in 2000, he was granted the Master of Surgery degree by The Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine for his research in the field of molecular biology of breast cancer.

He was appointed as a substantive consultant breast surgeon at St. George's Hospital trust in February 2001 until November 2010 when he was appointed as an honorary consultant breast surgeon at St. George's Hospital.

In 2002, Kefah was appointed Professor of Breast Cancer Surgery (honorary) at Brunel University of London in recognition of his contribution to breast cancer research. In 2005, he was appointed as a Reader in Breast Surgery at St. George’s University of London in recognition of his outstanding and extensive research contribution in the field of breast cancer.

His clinical interests include the early detection of breast cancer, management of breast pain, rapid assessment of breast lumps, DCIS, LCIS, minimally-invasive breast surgery, nipple discharge, sentinel node biopsy, wireless breast localisation (Savi Scout, Magseed, and radiofrequency identification tags) oncoplastic breast surgery, skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomy and immediate ADM/mesh-assisted implant-based pre-pectoral breast reconstruction, breast lipofilling/fat grafting, prevention of breast cancer, genetic predisposition, breast MRI, risk-reducing surgery for BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB2 gene mutation carriers and the management of benign conditions including breast cysts, breast pain and fibroadenomas. He also has extensive experience in reconstructive and aesthetic/cosmetic breast surgery.

Among other interests, Kefah has been heavily involved in research in the field of molecular biology and the clinical aspects of breast cancer, as well as aesthetic breast surgery including breast reconstruction following mastectomy and augmentation mammoplasty using implants and fat transfer. He has authored or coauthored more than 400 scientific papers, commentaries, editorials, and textbook chapters. He has also authored 14 textbooks that are aimed at medical students and postgraduate doctors. His current academic interest is focused on how to apply the advances from clinical trials to daily surgical practice.

According to Google Scholar, Prof. Mokbel has a H index of 50 and I-10 index of 167. He is on the editorial board for several international medical journals and is a peer reviewer for a number of leading medical journals including The Lancet. He has supervised and examined a significant number of postgraduate degrees (MD, MS, MSc) and PhDs.

He is the founder and current president of Breast Cancer Hope, a charity dedicated to “improving the quantity and quality of life in women diagnosed with breast cancer". He was featured in Tatler magazine’s Best Doctor’s Guide as one of the ‘Top Breast Surgeons’ in 2006, 2007 and 2013. He was also named in Times magazine's list of Britain's Top Doctors in 2010.

It is important that HCA is transparent about our relationship with those doctors who provide us with clinical guidance on delivering the best possible care to patients and operating our hospitals safely and efficiently. We set out here some of the ways in which we work together and the amount we pay this doctor for such services.

I am so grateful that a friend was able to recommend Prof. Mokbel when I was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago. From the moment I met him I was filled with confidence that I would receive the best possible care. My diagnosis came in the first week of lockdown due to the pandemic in March 2020. Prof. Mokbel willingly conducted telephone consultations late into the evening when I could not travel to the clinic, and he took the time during these conversations to explain details of my treatment to me thoroughly and clearly. I am so appreciative of all he has done for me.
