“Having been catheterised for 7 months as the result of a very large prostate causing urine retention I was referred to Mr Aho. A phone consultation was promptly arranged at which Mr Aho confirmed my suitability for HOLeP procedure. He explained thoroughly the procedure and post operative outcome. I was admitted to the Princess Grace Hospital and had the operation that morning. I had little or no pain afterwards and had the catheter removed the following morning and then discharged later that day. Mr Aho talked me through everything before the operation and then visited me again afterwards and the following day. I consider myself so lucky to have had Mr Aho as my consultant and he is both a very kind and caring person but also very professional. I have had no problems since and he has improved my quality of life more than I could ever have hoped. I cannot thank him enough “

    About

Tev Aho is a Consultant Urologist who has a specialist interest in treating men with bothersome urinary symptoms and with urinary retention due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

He is the most experienced Holmium Laser Enucleation Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) surgeon in the UK, having performed more than 2,200 procedures. He is frequently invited to lecture on HoLEP in the UK and abroad, and has convened an annual HoLEP course at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge since 2005. He has demonstrated live laser prostate surgery (including the world’s first thulium laser enucleation of the prostate) to his peers on more than 30 occasions at conferences throughout the world and has published extensively on HoLEP in the urological literature.

Tev is also experienced in performing the Urolift, Rezum and Aquablation procedures which are other options for treating BPH. He enjoys helping men to think about what is important to them when considering treatment to improve quality of life by relieving catheter-dependent urinary retention or bothersome urinary symptoms. Once treatment priorities have been identified Tev takes the time necesaary to discuss what the most appropriate treatment option is depending on each individual's situation. In this way, he offers a comprehensive and truly bespoke service for men with urination issues.

Tev has been offering Urolift since 2015. With his own experience of treating men with Urolift and his background of extensive HoLEP experience, which includes doing HoLEP for men who have not had good outcomes from Urolift due to incorrect Urolift placement or their prostate not being the ideal size and/or shape for Urolift, Tev can advise on whether Urolift is likely to be effective for you or not.

Tev was one of the first 3 UK urologists to perform Aquablation in 2017 and was part of the first multinational group to investigate aquablation by participating in the widely published WATER Study.

Tev performed the first NHS Rezum procedures in Cambridgeshire in 2020 and is pleased to offer this novel treatment to men as a day-stay procedure both privately and in the NHS.

Tev moved from New Zealand to the UK to be the Clinical Fellow in Uro-oncology at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2003 and was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon there the following year.

Tev has been involved in HoLEP research from its earliest days. During his training in NZ, he spent a year learning HoLEP from the urologists who invented it, eventually introducing it at CUH in 2004 where it rapidly became, and remains, the treatment of choice for the majority of men seeking a surgical treatment for urinary symptoms or retention. CUH was one of the first centres in the UK to offer HoLEP.

Tev is committed to surgical training and was the founding President of the UK Holmium User Group (HUG). He designed and implemented the national HUG Training Programme for HoLEP (a model which is now used internationally) and has mentored many surgeons in HoLEP. He was the Urology Training Programme Director in the East of England for 5 years until 2014 and was then on the Urology Specialist Advisory Committee which is responsible for urological training in the UK for another 5 years.

His other specialist interest is the surgical treatment of kidney cancer, and he is one of the highest volume kidney surgeons in the UK, offering both laparoscopic and open kidney surgery. He also performs laparoscopic pyeloplasty for PUJ obstruction.

Tev works at the following private Hospitals and clinics:

Cambridge: Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital and Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital

London: The Princess Grace Hospital and The Harley Street Diagnostic Clinic

    Newmarket: GenesisCare

Ouside of work and family Tev's interests include: Running marathons (Aiming to complete the 6 World Marathon Majors: London, Berlin, Chicago and New York completed to date), music and musicals (very eclectic tastes), attending music festivals and the Theatre, eating good food, drinking good wine and whiskey and enjoying good company.

Tev's approach was superb from the very beginning. He fully explained the Rezum procedure and other options before I made a final choice. He met me pre op to reassure and give a further explanation as to what was going to happen and what to expect. He met me post op to talk through the procedure and the outcome and how to manage the ensuing days and weeks. He continued to keep in touch thereafter and to liaise with me and the post op nurse over the ensuing two to three weeks. I felt fully cared for and fully informed.

I came to Mr Aho in trouble in retention after recent orthopaedic surgery. He carried out a HoLEP prostatectomy after I had had that catheter in for 3 weeks. It has been very successful & I was back working at home 2 weeks later-no pain after 2 weeks, good stream, no incontinence, maybe nocturia x1. I am very pleased with the result. I found his manner very sympathetic & helpful.

I can not recommend Mr Aho highly enough. It became apparent recently that I needed surgical intervention to resolve an ongoing issue with BPH which had suddenly taken a turn for the worse, resulting in urinary retention. I contacted Mr Aho's secretary Katie who kindly arranged a telephone consultation with him within 24 hours. He listened to my history and symptoms and explained the options to me in a clear, down to earth manner, and patiently answered all my questions. I felt totally reassured and knew that I was in safe hands. I was recommended to have HoLEP procedure which was carried out a week later at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital. The operation was a complete success, and I was discharged the following day. The care I received from everyone at Spire Cambridge Lea was first class. I can honestly say the procedure was pain-free, and I havent needed to take any pain killers at all since I returned home. I am amazed at how much better my flow already is, only 2 days post-op. I need to stand back a fair bit to avoid hitting the cistern which is not something I needed to worry about for a very long time!! As well as being a very skilled surgeon, Mr Aho has impeccable bedside manner which has made the whole process so much more pleasant. He is very approachable, and always has time for his patients. I have no hesitation at all in recommending Mr Aho to anyone looking for a first class urologist. As far as I am concerned, he's arguably the best in the country.

I am humbled by and grateful for your very kind comments and will pass them on to the team at the Spire Cambridge Lea who are indeed top class. So pleased you have experienced the benefits of HoLEP even within a few days of having the procedure. I expect things will improve even further over the next few weeks. Have a great Christmas!

I really appreciate your comments. Thank you very much! My job is not done until every person I've operated on has fully recovered after their surgery. The care doesn't stop with the surgery. It continues until the full benefits are realised. Wishing you the best Christmas possible in the current covid situation!

Dr Aho suggested treating my BHP with the urolift procedure with has none of the side effects associated with more conventional treatments such as TURP. My case had been treated with tamsulosin and finesterade for a number of years until their effect was minimal and the side effects were affecting my life significantly. Dr Aho was very thorough explaining in detail the pros and potential cons of urolift and we agreed to go ahead with it during the first part of the 2020 pandemic. After the procedure I fell into a group of patients that needed a catheter and he carefully followed my progress during this challenging time. Urolift is a relatively quick procedure to have and my recovery was quick. My urine flow is very good several months after and I have completely recovered from the effects of the drugs I was taking for my BHP. A big advantage of urolift is that it does not interfere with sexual function unlike other procedures, which I consider to be a big plus. Is strongly recommended this procedure and especially Dr Aho when considering treatment for BHP.

Thankyou very much for your kind comments. I am glad you are happy with the outcome of your urolift procedure. Urolift is the only Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) procedure that has no risk of adversely altering sexual function. On the other hand, the medications used for treating BPH can all affect sexual function. Urolift is great for men with prostates < 80cc who wish to improve their urinary symptoms whilst fully preserving their sexual function. It's an excellent alternative to longterm medication

If I need a surgeon or other health professional, I want him or her to be like Tev Aho. I found him authoritative (but NOT authoritarian), and informative (including the very helpful material he has published on his website and in print), direct but gentle, and able to listen and deal with any queries. In dealing with my case a couple of issues arose: a low white blood cell count in a pre-operation test, and extra delay to the operation because of restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr Aho saw me through the first issue and made a point of getting me into hospital for the operation at the first opportunity after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

Thankyou so much. Truly humbled by your kind comments. Although covid slowed things down for you it was a relief for both of us to be able to proceed safely despite the disruptions and tragic consequences it has had for so many. We have developed safe clinical pathways that allow men to proceed with benign prostate surgery in this covid era. Help is still available for men in catheter-dependent urinary retention or with severe urinary symptoms that impact negatively on quality of life

For the last four months I have had to suffer wearing a catheter, which has severely restricted my ability to perform my usual active lifestyle (playing sports, riding a motorcycle, even simple things like bending over to lift items and do the gardening have caused discomfort). During the pre-operation consultation and leading up to the operation itself, Mr Aho was very attentive to my needs and provided me with a lot of comfort that HoLEP was the right procedure for me. He answered all my questions via email during the few weeks leading up to the operation. On the day itself, when I met Mr Aho for the first time, after a nervous start, when it became “real” that I was to have major surgery, I was given calm assurance from both the medical and nursing staff. Mr Aho himself could not have been more helpful - he briefed me on what to expect before, during and after surgery and was very open to any questions - overall, I would say he has a lovely bedside manner. Post-surgery, whilst I had some pain, as was to be expected, I was provided with sufficient levels of pain relief to make it tolerable, with just the odd bladder spasm causing me discomfort. The day after surgery, I felt a little worse than expected as I had an adverse reaction to the Furosemide, causing me to vomit and feel nauseous through the day; however, this soon wore off and I was much better the following day. Previous examinations by my GP and the local urology department in Scotland had led me to believe that, whilst sufficiently over-sized to cause retention, my prostate was not very enlarged; however, Mr Aho advised that it was actually four times the normal size, so the operation took longer than expected - yet his approach was calm and reassuring and he showed no negative feeling about having been deceived or taken unaware (as, due to Covid, he had been unable to physically examine me himself prior to the operation). The operation appears to have been a great success - I have a strong flow again, and have had no feeling of incontinence and the level of paid/discomfort has been moderate and certainly tolerable (in fact, I was able to come off the pain relief earlier than expected). I would highly recommend Mr Aho to others in my position, not only for his technical skill but also for his interpersonal / people management skills and can’t thank him enough for giving me (so far, at least, much of) my old life back.

Thankyou very much for your kind comments. and for travelling from Scotland to London to have your HoLEP procedure. Although I offer a range of different procedures for benign enlargement of the prostate, HoLEP is the most effective with 99% success in terms of getting rid of the need for urinary catheterisation. So glad you are now catheter-free and able to get on with life as normal again!

As 55year old with no medical history and reasonably fit, I experienced sudden acute urinary retention requiring a catheter. My consultant recommended Mr Aho. After phone consultation with Mr Aho, arrangements were made for HoLEP on 5/9/20 at Princess Grace Hospital London. Mr Aho saw me both prior to surgery, after surgery (to let me know how it had gone) and also pre-discharge. No pain or discomfort at all from procedure. Felt absolutely fine immediately after surgery and was released at mid-day the following day. Having had a catheter pre-op for 2 months I was concerned about bladder control, but no problems at all. Fantastic results and excellent job.

I endured my first prostate biopsy in 2016. The procedure was akin to being kicked in the backside by a horse and then being anally raped by a swarm of angry wasps. Severe prostatitis followed 6 months later. The only option at that time was radical prostatectomy. Dysuria and nocturia became the norm and I lived with it. In September 2019 after surgery to my left foot my creatinine level was found to be dangerously high. A bladder scan revealed acute urine retention and a catheter was fitted on the 3rd December. After waiting 3 months for a HoLEP I gave up and went private. That appointment was cancelled with 4 hours notice on the 10th March. In desperation I sought out the Cambridge Urology Partnership and was relieved to get a consultation with Tev Aho the next day. After the consultation with Tev I felt relief and hope for the first time in 3 months. My HoLEP was carried out at the Princess Grace Hospital just 9 days later and joy, the catheter was removed at 06.15 the following morning. After 3 months of complete misery Tev has given me my life back. The day after getting home I started peeing normally. 3 days later urine was clear of blood. Today, just 2 weeks later, I have been back gently pottering on my allotment. Apart from some slight burning / stinging functions are completely normal. I can smile again. Words are completely inadequate to express my gratitude to Tev who fitted me in before the covid19 lockdown, Janice, Mater and the team at Princess Grace.

Diagnosed with an enlarged prostate in 2013, I experienced a benign TRUS biopsy and was subsequently monitored by regular PSA testing and scans suggested by the consultant team at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. The results indicated a large prostate and fortunately no obvious signs of cancer. My urine flow was weak but it came as a shock to suddenly experience acute retention early in October 2019. A very painful trip to A&E resulted in catheterisation. The pain stopped and although I remained active I felt that the quality of my life had been severely compromised. My local consultant suggested the best way forward was to learn self-catheterisation. The look on my face spoke of my reaction, but I agreed to at least think about it. In the meantime I spoke with an old friend who had experienced the same symptoms and had undergone a very successful Holep procedure in Kent. I researched this and discovered that it was not available in Warwickshire. However I did discover references to Mr Tev Aho a leading and very successful surgeon specialising in this modern procedure. I rejected the offer of self-catheterisation and asked my consultant to refer me to Mr Aho. He told me that if he were ever to need this procedure, Mr Aho would be his choice of surgeon. The referral was made but by early December I had not received a response. I decided to contact Mr Aho’s private secretary directly, who turned out to be the wonderfully understanding and helpful Janice Haddock. I obtained the referral from my GP, photographed it, E-mailed it to Janice, who told me that Mr Aho might be able to add me to his list for early January, great progress! Fifteen minutes later Janice phoned me back; she had spoken to Mr Aho and he had suggested that if I could get to London for a pre op. assessment on 4th December he could carry out the procedure at the Princess Grace Hospital the following Saturday 7th December. Everything worked perfectly and after an overnight stay I was able to return home and prepare for a catheter free Christmas, the best gift I have ever received. Throughout, Mr Aho provided clear information and inspired my absolute confidence in a successful outcome. This was well placed. I was driving again within a couple of days and despite initially a sizeable investment in Tena, began a swift period of recovery aided by daily pelvic floor exercises; by mid February I was really functioning better than I had for years, in fact completely normally. My review in March had to be on the telephone, but resulted in Mr Aho being able to discharge me, although he will continue to monitor my future PSA results. I can’t thank him enough for restoring my quality of life. He tops my list of people I’m most glad to have met. I would unhesitatingly recommend Mr Aho, his team and Holep to anyone in a similar position and hope that through his regional training programmes an even greater number of men can benefit from this advanced and highly effective procedure

During the problems caused by covid lockdowns, Tev Aho went the extra mile for me, perhaps several extra miles, getting a slot for my operation at a very early moment. His reputation among his colleagues is very high; more than once I was told " You couldn't be in better hands" and so it proved. His skill set doesn't just reside in his technical expertise, but in his humanity and consideration for his patient as someone with fears and feelings, carefully explaining what is involved and encouraging about the possible outcomes. In fact, at the age of 88, with a heart condition and on anticoagulants, I seem to have recovered quickly and without post operative pain, something I must ascribe to his surgical expertise. I rarely recommend anybody, since I am aware that everyone's experience is different, but I would have no hesitation in doing so in Mr Aho's case.

I trained with Tev 'Aho when we were in Cambridge together and when I moved into my Consultant post our friendship continued. Tev 'Aho taught me the technique of Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate and with his help and support we have developed our service over the last 7 years and completed over 1100 cases, with great success. I continue to aspire to be able to operate like Tev 'Aho when it comes to HoLEP surgery and we have the opportunity, twice a year, where we meet and exchange tips & tricks as part of a National Masterclass we run together. Mr 'Aho is the best HoLEP surgeon I have seen anywhere and I would happily have my loved ones treated by his skill, expertise and down to earth bedside approach in all aspects of urology care. He is an excellent clinician and a super teacher.
