Tev Aho is a Consultant Urologist who has a specialist interest in treating men with bothersome urinary symptoms and with urinary retention due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
He is the most experienced Holmium Laser Enucleation Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) surgeon in the UK, having performed more than 2,200 procedures. He is frequently invited to lecture on HoLEP in the UK and abroad, and has convened an annual HoLEP course at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge since 2005. He has demonstrated live laser prostate surgery (including the world’s first thulium laser enucleation of the prostate) to his peers on more than 30 occasions at conferences throughout the world and has published extensively on HoLEP in the urological literature.
Tev is also experienced in performing the Urolift, Rezum and Aquablation procedures which are other options for treating BPH. He enjoys helping men to think about what is important to them when considering treatment to improve quality of life by relieving catheter-dependent urinary retention or bothersome urinary symptoms. Once treatment priorities have been identified Tev takes the time necesaary to discuss what the most appropriate treatment option is depending on each individual's situation. In this way, he offers a comprehensive and truly bespoke service for men with urination issues.
Tev has been offering Urolift since 2015. With his own experience of treating men with Urolift and his background of extensive HoLEP experience, which includes doing HoLEP for men who have not had good outcomes from Urolift due to incorrect Urolift placement or their prostate not being the ideal size and/or shape for Urolift, Tev can advise on whether Urolift is likely to be effective for you or not.
Tev was one of the first 3 UK urologists to perform Aquablation in 2017 and was part of the first multinational group to investigate aquablation by participating in the widely published WATER Study.
Tev performed the first NHS Rezum procedures in Cambridgeshire in 2020 and is pleased to offer this novel treatment to men as a day-stay procedure both privately and in the NHS.
Tev moved from New Zealand to the UK to be the Clinical Fellow in Uro-oncology at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2003 and was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon there the following year.
Tev has been involved in HoLEP research from its earliest days. During his training in NZ, he spent a year learning HoLEP from the urologists who invented it, eventually introducing it at CUH in 2004 where it rapidly became, and remains, the treatment of choice for the majority of men seeking a surgical treatment for urinary symptoms or retention. CUH was one of the first centres in the UK to offer HoLEP.
Tev is committed to surgical training and was the founding President of the UK Holmium User Group (HUG). He designed and implemented the national HUG Training Programme for HoLEP (a model which is now used internationally) and has mentored many surgeons in HoLEP. He was the Urology Training Programme Director in the East of England for 5 years until 2014 and was then on the Urology Specialist Advisory Committee which is responsible for urological training in the UK for another 5 years.
His other specialist interest is the surgical treatment of kidney cancer, and he is one of the highest volume kidney surgeons in the UK, offering both laparoscopic and open kidney surgery. He also performs laparoscopic pyeloplasty for PUJ obstruction.
Tev works at the following private Hospitals and clinics:
Cambridge: Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital and Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital
London: The Princess Grace Hospital and The Harley Street Diagnostic Clinic
Newmarket: GenesisCare
Ouside of work and family Tev's interests include: Running marathons (Aiming to complete the 6 World Marathon Majors: London, Berlin, Chicago and New York completed to date), music and musicals (very eclectic tastes), attending music festivals and the Theatre, eating good food, drinking good wine and whiskey and enjoying good company.
FRACS (Urol) Royal Australasian College of Surgeons 2003

I am humbled by and grateful for your very kind comments and will pass them on to the team at the Spire Cambridge Lea who are indeed top class. So pleased you have experienced the benefits of HoLEP even within a few days of having the procedure. I expect things will improve even further over the next few weeks. Have a great Christmas!
I really appreciate your comments. Thank you very much! My job is not done until every person I've operated on has fully recovered after their surgery. The care doesn't stop with the surgery. It continues until the full benefits are realised. Wishing you the best Christmas possible in the current covid situation!
Thankyou very much for your kind comments. I am glad you are happy with the outcome of your urolift procedure. Urolift is the only Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) procedure that has no risk of adversely altering sexual function. On the other hand, the medications used for treating BPH can all affect sexual function. Urolift is great for men with prostates < 80cc who wish to improve their urinary symptoms whilst fully preserving their sexual function. It's an excellent alternative to longterm medication
Thankyou so much. Truly humbled by your kind comments. Although covid slowed things down for you it was a relief for both of us to be able to proceed safely despite the disruptions and tragic consequences it has had for so many. We have developed safe clinical pathways that allow men to proceed with benign prostate surgery in this covid era. Help is still available for men in catheter-dependent urinary retention or with severe urinary symptoms that impact negatively on quality of life
Thankyou very much for your kind comments. and for travelling from Scotland to London to have your HoLEP procedure. Although I offer a range of different procedures for benign enlargement of the prostate, HoLEP is the most effective with 99% success in terms of getting rid of the need for urinary catheterisation. So glad you are now catheter-free and able to get on with life as normal again!
Thankyou so much for your kind comments. It must be a relief to be catheter-free now. It was my pleasure to be able to help!
Thankyou very much for your kind comments. It was a pleasure to be able to be of assistance!
Thanks very much for your kind feedback! It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to relieve your prostatic obstruction, and I'm delighted that your HoLEP procedure and the recovery phase went as expected, and that you are pleased with the outcome.
Thanks so much for your kind feedback! I will never forget doing your procedure on the day the Covid lockdown was announced. It was a relief to be able to free you from catheterisation before the lockdown and I am so pleased that you have regained the quality of life that was so adversely affected by your previous need for catheterisation.
Thank you very much for your kind feedback! I am delighted we were able to get you catheter-free in time for Christmas and that you are so happy with the outcome of your HoLEP procedure.
Thank you so much for your kind feedback and for giving me the privilege of performing your HoLEP surgery. It was a great pleasure to be given the opportunity to free you from catheterisation so that you can get on with life. At 88years of age your energy and enthusiasm for living life is inspirational!

I trained with Tev 'Aho when we were in Cambridge together and when I moved into my Consultant post our friendship continued. Tev 'Aho taught me the technique of Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate and with his help and support we have developed our service over the last 7 years and completed over 1100 cases, with great success. I continue to aspire to be able to operate like Tev 'Aho when it comes to HoLEP surgery and we have the opportunity, twice a year, where we meet and exchange tips & tricks as part of a National Masterclass we run together. Mr 'Aho is the best HoLEP surgeon I have seen anywhere and I would happily have my loved ones treated by his skill, expertise and down to earth bedside approach in all aspects of urology care. He is an excellent clinician and a super teacher.
Tev is a world-renowned BPH specialist and one of the UK's leading experts in HoLEP. I would not hesitate to recommend him as an expert in this field.
