Professor Stephen Spiro was head of Respiratory Medicine at UCLH until retiring from the NHS in December 2008. He is now an Honorary Consultant at UCLH and Royal Brompton Hospitals.
He helped establish the London Lung Cancer Group, which as lead clinical trials in lung cancers since 1977. He has also completed various research programmes investigating respiratory physiology, sleep disordered breathing and screening in people with a high risk of lung cancer.
Professor Spiro is actively involved in education and training, and still lectures undergraduates at University College London Hospitals. He has authored and edited a number of major respiratory medicine textbooks and also published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
He was formally the President of The British Thoracic Society and The European Respiratory Society. Professor Spiro is also Chair of the Rennie Grove Hospice Care and Vice Chair of the British Lung Foundation.
