Mr Shaun Preston is a General Surgeon and is Head of the Oesophago-Gastric Unit at The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust Hospital. He specialises in Upper GI surgery, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and endoscopy. His areas of interest include the management of reflux, Barrett's oesophagus, oesophageal and gastric cancer, hernia repair, management of gallstones, robotic surgery, and interventional endoscopy including endoscopic ultrasound.
Mr Preston attained Bachelor of Science (BSc(Hons), 1987), Bachelor of Medicine (MB, 1990), Bachelor of Surgery (ChB, 1990) degrees and a Doctor of Medicine (MD, 1997) from Leeds University. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was awarded his Fellowship (FRCS(Eng)) in 1996. His Intercollegiate Fellowship in General Surgery (Upper GI) (FRCS(Gen)) was awarded in 2000, where he was also honoured with the ASGBI Gold Medal &
Prize for the best results across the UK and outstanding performance in the viva voce examinations.
Mr Preston was also awarded the prestigious Japanese Foundation for the Promotion of Cancer Research / British Council Fellowship at the National Cancer Center Hospital, Tokyo (2001) where he worked in the Gastric, Oesophageal &
Endoscopic Divisions. He also was a Visiting Surgeon at the Division of Foregut Surgery, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (2006). He has an international reputation, lectures widely and demonstrates surgical technique around the world. In 2015 he was the Distinguished Visiting Lecturer at the Royal College of Surgeons of Australia Annual Scientific Meeting.
He is a member of many professional bodies and has also been a Council Member of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS) and the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain, International
Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and Ireland (ALSGBI).
He is Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Surrey. His research interests are in the evaluation and optimal management of patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer. He is National Chief Investigator for one
NCRI portfolio study (NeoAEGIS) and Principal Investigator on another (OCCAMS). He has clinical interests in Enhanced Recovery (ERAS), Standardised Clinical Pathways and Prehabilitation ahead of surgery (Prehab).
