    About

Dr Ruwan Chinthaka Wimalasundera is a Consultant Obstetrician and Fetal Medicine specialist, based at University College London Hospital, where he runs the multiple pregnancy service, and he also sees patients privately at the Portland Hospital. Dr Wimalusudera is a leading expert in the management of multiple pregnancies and prior to his current position, he was the Lead for Fetal Medicine at Imperial College Healthcare Trust, based at the Centre for Fetal Care at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital for 10 years, where he ran the multiple pregnancy service.

Dr Wimalasundera grew up in West London and trained in medicine at King’s College of Medicine. He then specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospitals and completed a PhD thesis in ‘Vascular Reactivity in Pre-Eclampsia’ at Imperial College. In 2003, he was appointed as a consultant at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital.

He manages low and high risk pregnancies and specialises in the management of multiple pregnancies including complicated monochorionic pregnancies. He has particular interest in the management of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome in monochorionic twins using fetoscopic laser ablation to placental vessels and he has referrals from all over the UK for this. He encourages the natural management of pregnancies, but also offers the option of a Natural Caesarean Section when appropriate.
