“From the first moment I met Mr Casula, he explained the situation I found myself in, in a very clear manner to a non-medical person, and the options available to me. He swiftly organised the procedure to be carried as soon as possible, in these COVID-19 changing times. Mr Casula Pre, during and post operational care was excellent, reinforcing the best methods of recovery. I feel very privileged to have someone of Mr Casula’s reputation and skills to have been my Cardiothoracic Surgeon at my time of need. “

    About

Roberto Casula is Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Imperial College NHS Trust in London. He was appointed at Imperial in 2001.

He is one of the most experienced cardiac surgeons in the UK in both traditional and key-hole heart procedures; he performed the first successful robotic and minimal access heart operations in the UK in 2003. He has been offering his patients all available minimal access heart operations including coronary revascularisation, mitral, tricuspid valve repair and replacements, minimal access aortic valve replacements and minimal access surgical or hybrid atrial fibrillation ablation.

Roberto graduated at Padova University Medical School in Italy in 1989, and then trained in the UK in Cardiac, Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Organs Transplantation. He is registered with the GMC (no.: 4003801) and a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. His excellent cardiac surgical results over 20 years activity have been regularly published by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery and are available in the public domain.

Over the last two decades, Mr Casula has been honoured to be invited as a visiting surgeon and has personally performed traditional, minimal access and robotic cardiac operations in other European countries and prestigious Heart Centres including Milan, Bologna, Bari, Florence, Pisa, Udine, Athens, the Middle East and the West Indies.

Since his first consultant appointment in 1998, Dr Casula has carried out over five thousand traditional major cardiac operations and performed the entire spectrum of cardiac surgical procedures including reoperations, complex isolated or multiple valves combined procedures, coronary revascularisation and atrial fibrillation surgery.

His academic interests have mainly focused on new surgical technology and surgical innovation, robotics and frailty assessment in the elderly and has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and a 550 pages textbook and atlas in Minimal Invasive Thoracic and Cardiac and Surgery.

Mr Casula is one of few experienced heart surgeons in the UK with a large and established experience in both minimal access and traditional heart operations and each patient is assessed according to his/her clinical needs and suitability for either type of surgical approach.

He is available for your surgical suitability assessment if you have been told that only a traditional operation is possible in your case and you wish to have a second opinion.

Mr Casula has provided a detailed explanation of the procedure plus explaining the option and the reasons for taking that course of action. I have felt very comfortable right from our first meeting to trust him to take the the best options on my interest. He has been very diligent in seeing me pre and post op and explaining the minor changes to the nurses care plan. I couldn’t recommended him high enough and I’m very grateful that he was available to perform this CABG.

Inspires complete confidence. However I would have given the bedside manner 5 stars but I found him a trifle hesitant. I am sure he must be the best cardiac surgeon of the moment.

Following the results of an angiogram, I was informed that I needed triple heart bypass surgery and Mr Roberto Casula was highly recommended to me. I was extremely worried about having such a major operation. However after talking to Mr Casula via video call, I felt much better and was made to feel I was in excellent hands. He explained the procedure in detail and what I should expect in the weeks that followed. The conversation was not hurried and he put me completely at ease. The operation at The Wellington Hospital on the 9th of October went very well and the care from the nurses and staff was fantastic. I am now 4 weeks on, getting stronger every day and am hugely grateful to Mr Casula and his team.

Dr Casula performed surgery to replace my aortic valve. Having spoken to several surgeons prior to meeting Dr Casula I was immediately impressed with his ability to condense some very complex information into plain, easy English. I felt very confident in him from the first meeting. Heart surgery is scary whichever way you angle it... but I could not have felt I was in better hands. Thank you.

I would like to thank Mr Casula for the excellent surgery which he carried out on my heart. Since I feel so much better now, I know that the surgery was of the highest standard. In addition, Mr Casula provided several opportunities for me and my family to raise questions with him both pre and post surgery and to discuss any issues that we had. I believe that Mr Casula saved my life and I will be eternally grateful to him.

Following referral by my GP and from the initial consultation I was treated with care and consideration. This was very reassurng as the technical aspects of my condition were explained in detail and understanding to me as a layman. The decision to have an aorta valve replacement together with two by-pass veins was therefore made without hesitation. The subsequent open heart surgery was performed with virtually no discomfort to me but clearly with great skill and care by the surgeon and his team. My recovery was quick and since then I have been fit and well. After five years the arrhythmias that had been present for some time became more pronounced and as a consequence I was fitted with a pacemaker. this is working well and is supervised by Medtronic through my iPhone. At eighty-eight I continue to enjoy good health. My thanks to the extreme skill and care of the Cardiac Specialists who continue to monitor my health.

Mr Casula was excellent at advice, mitral valve replacement surgery and follow-up. He re-assured my anxious wife on the day of the operation and during the week I was isolated in hospital. He followed up with me on Facetime and prescribed blood thinners which meant I did not have to attend check-ups during lockdown.

Mr Casula saved my mums life. We were referred to him as a result of a second opinion. At the time of referral mums heart valves were in a severely diseased state and she was faced with a reduced life expectancy as a result of this valve deterioration. Mr Casula was very reassuring from his first interaction with mum and made her feel instantly at ease. She needed valve replacement for both her aortic and mitral valve and repair of the tricuspid valve. This in and of itself is extremely complex but there was added complexity as she had previously had open heart surgery a number of years ago so the redo element at her age made this a very risky surgery which was daunting and a frankly terrifying experience going in for her and us as her family. But all interaction with Mr Casula and his incredibly helpful and kind office helped alleviate so many of the fears we were experiencing. Due to the current pandemic I was not able to be with her so the wait on the day of the surgery was excruciating. But Mr Casula called as soon as the surgery was complete and explained everything to me in such a clear and relatable way given I do not have a medical background and he was very reassuring and positive for the future. With the amount of surgeries of this nature he must have done in the past, his experience and skill is second to none. In the week or so that has followed he has been consistently accessible, kind and encouraging. There is a long road ahead for mums continued recovery but to know that there is the support to hand from him takes a weight off our minds. Thank you sounds so insufficient when I consider what he has done. My mum is very precious to our family and thanks to Mr Casula she will now be with us for many years to come

I was back home with my family within a week. Today I enjoy great health and go about life as normal. Mr Casula was exactly what you would want for an operation that is daunting. His explanations were very clear, and given in layman's language which was easy to understand. He had time for questions and didn't rush me at all. His bedside manner was very calming and made me feel very comfortable. I would certainly recommend Mr. Casula for anyone having a similar procedure to me.

Dr. Casula was my consultant/surgeon for a heart surgery. He is very experienced, professional and above all, approachable. He gave considered advise, and was always clear in his explanations and communication. I was kept informed every step of the way. My operation was very successful, and Dr. Casula also showed great after care for me as a patient, which i very much appreciated. Thank you.
