Prof Rakesh Uppal is a Consultant cardiac and aortic surgeon at Barts Heart Centre and Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Barts and the London School of Medicine.He runs a busy tertiary cardiac surgical service with expertise in valve repair and is part of the aortic dissection team.

In the past he has been Clinical and Group Director for Cardiac, Renal, Vascular Services at Barts Health.

He is Lead for Surgical Research progamme at the Heart Centre . His research interests include renal failure following surgery, stem cell treatments for the failing heart and the genetics of cardiac disease. He spent 2 years at Duke, NC looking at right ventricular function.

As Director of Life Sciences for the university and trust he is helping to set up a large life sciences cluster in London bringing academia, clincians and industry to help to improve health outcomes and bring new therapies to bear.
