“Six months ago my daughter (aged 18) received corrective spinal fusion surgery at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in Stanmore under the care of Mr Michael Mokawem, having been diagnosed with scoliosis 10 months earlier. My praise for Mr Mokawem as a surgeon and as a kind, supportive human being could not be greater. Prior to the surgery Mr Mokawem explained the procedure to my daughter and myself in exactly the right detail for us to understand, in a way that was honest and reassuring, addressing the risks and the rationale every step of the way. He is a calming, patient, empathetic and genuine gentleman who really cares about the physical and mental well-being of his patients and their family. His whole team at the hospital have also provided excellent support, from nurses caring for her and keeping her spirits up, physiotherapists preparing her to embrace normal life again, the teams performing x-rays and making the supportive braces. I cannot fault the care she received in the hospital during her operation or the follow-up care she has benefited from post-operatively. Now, six months on, my daughter is infinitely more comfortable, and much more confident in herself and the ‘normal’ future that lies ahead of her. We have no regrets about making this important decision to have the surgery. We placed a lot of confidence in Mr Mokawem, and we can honestly say that we could not have wished for a better surgeon. We would recommend him whole-heartedly. “

Before coming to see Mr Mokawem my 15 years old son was seen by FOUR consultants (including a top private one) in other London hospitals for his rapidly progressing scoliosis. Every doctor we saw previously seemed tired, bothered, uninterested and totally unprepared for our visit 😱. One of the issues was difficulty with requesting/accessing previous xRays images from our local hospital to compare them to see scoliosis progression, which should be a simple enough process, one would think, but it was made to look impossible. On the other hand, Mary, Mr Mokawem’s secretary, made the same task seems so easy. Although reassured by Mary prior to our consultation I was still slightly apprehensive, based on such a bad previous experience But to my absolute delight upon entering consulting room I saw my son xRay imaging displayed on three of Mr Mokawem computers. He clearly studied my son case prior to meeting with us. Mr Mokawem was very pleasant, super professional, kind, attentive and most importantly truly caring. My son is not a great communicator and feel socially awkward most of the time, especially with authoritative figures, but Mr Mokawem made him feel instantly at ease, explaining his finding directly to my son, asking him appropriate questions to determine the right level of care. After we left our appointment, I asked my son what he thought about it and usually he will say “all right”, but he just carried on sharing his thoughts with me.... 😃 Well, what do I think about it? I think Mr Mokawem is a pure example of a good caring doctor! I am happy we found a doctor we can trust to care for our son 😊

Spinal decompresson
Following my recent consultation Mr Mokawem I underwent a nerve root decompression procedure. I am delighted with the outcome as I have said goodbye to the sciatica which had been an unwelcome feature in my daily life. The procedure was explained to me in understandable terms together with the risks involved. Michael and his team were professional and calm and I had absolute confidence in their ability to take care of me. Post operatively, there was more discomfort rather than pain which diminished within a few days. I was given guidance on recovery and how I could assist in this phase. The operation was at the RNOH and the facilities in the private care wing are outstanding. I can highly recommend Michael Mokawem,

Idiopathic Scoliosis
I personally chose Mr Mokawem, from all of the Consultant Surgeons based at the Stanmore Hospital, as I felt that he had a progressive view of spinal surgery. My daughter has idiopathic scoliosis and her curve has progressed. We visited Mr Mokawem for a second opinion to the original Consultant we have been with for the last eighteen months. Mr Mokawem had already reviewed the recent images I had sent to him, of my daughters spine and called me the day before for an initial chat. I immediately felt that I had made the correct decision, just from the initial telephone conversation, which was further cemented by our meeting at the Stanmore Hospital. I found Mr Mokawem to be exceptionally interested in really listening to our concerns and finding the best outcome for my daughter. His summary of his view for her treatment was measured, delivered carefully and most of all, delivered to my daughter, which was really important to me, that she was addressed in an adult fashion, as she is mature enough to understand what is happening to her own body. I was most appreciative of the fact that Mr Mokawem worked late on a Friday night, to accommodate seeing us at short notice and I received a full clinic letter on Monday morning, verbatim to our conversation. I cannot recommend Mr Mokawem highly enough and we have now transferred to Mr Mokawem's clinic, for on-going monitoring of my daughters situation. I am most certain that if we do ever have to consider surgery, Mr Mokawem would take exceptional care of my daughter, as it is very clear he is personally invested in the patients he treats. I cannot thank the entire team enough for the speed, accuracy and diligence shown to me and my daughter.

Mr Mokawem is a very engaging and caring Consultant. He was the first doctor to give me hope for a brighter future where all other doctors had failed. He is very attentive and listened to my problems and symptoms and ordered an number of scans. Once the scan results came back I revisited Mr Mokawem and he went through each scan and told me in layman's terms the results and how he could help me if I had tried all other avenues in reducing my back pain. He came across as a person who genuinely wanted to help me and others like me find a solution to my long term back pain. Once surgery was agreed Mr Mokawem kept me well informed and told me to call him at any time if there was something I wished to discuss with him. Before surgery he discussed in detail each procedure and what to expect post surgery clearly and concisely. Post surgery he came to see me every day and was genuinely happy for me that the operations had been successful in removing sciatic pain completely and reducing my back pain immensely. In my opinion I do not believe Mr Mokawem can improve to give even greater care, the care I received from him was exceptional.
