“I was recommended Mr Lam by my GP - from the first zoom call till my 6 month review I cannot recommend Mr Lam more - He was clear and precise with my problem and did not skate around it - He told me what I needed and the costs involved - In hospital he was exemplary both in his great expertise with my operation but in keeping me up to date with delays and exactly what was happening - I was never in the dark re info . My operation has changed my life as I can now move freely after only 6 months from 2 x 4hour operations This man is a genius ! and as an extra a funny and very friendly to me as a patient - I was never nervous as he kept Mme closely informed - This is critical for patients “

Following a road traffic accident I had received seven previous surgical interventions which had not delivered a lasting result. I finally approached Mr Khai Lam who proposed a combined approach of both a Fusion L5/S1 and Disc Replacement L4/L5. Clearly more conservative approaches were technically possible however we discussed the risks at length and I took the informed decision to take this 'hybrid' approach. The outcome is a feeling of stability in the spine and complete lack of pain, which I have not experienced in 20 years. My quality of life has improved and I still practice Yoga, however now without pain. I believe Mr Lam to be a highly skilled surgeon who looks for lasting outcomes whilst carefully explaining the risks

Mr Lam has been great throughout the whole process. I first saw Mr Lam back in 2018 after recurred pain from lower spine surgery that was under care of a different consultant in 2016/2017. Mr Lam was very professional and took time to explain everything to me in detail (many times) to make sure I was making informed decisions. It has been quite refreshing to meet a consultant so passionate about what he does and the information he wants to share. Mr Lam took time to visit me on many occasions while I was recovering at the hospital, just to check how I was doing. He and his team have been great to me. Now, nearly 2 months on, the pain I was experiencing has massively reduced to the point that I am actually able to enjoy the everyday.

I have absolute trust in Khai Lam and count him amongst the best medical practitioners I've encountered, regardless of speciality. His self-confidence is infectious. He couples mastery of his field with an immensely reassuring manner, and unlike many practitioners seems to relish his work and the opportunities it offers for technical advancement. He's patient in the face of anxiety, clearly explains every step and never pushes solutions that a patient might not yet be ready to consider. I couldn't offer higher praise.

Excellent communication and respect. Due diligence and careful consideration given pre surgery. Time was offered to digest all available options. No pressure to go ahead. Progressive approach offered, which I ultimately declined, but it was good to know all options available to me. Risks fully outlined. Bedside manner very good (comparatively to other surgeons and on an absolute basis). Efficient and friendly surgical team. Great follow up. Surgery itself was extremely successful, almost perfect, dare I say perfect!

In my experience Dr Lam is a world class specialist and surgeon. I received XLIF spinal fusion surgery at L2/L3 and I am currently 15 weeks post op today, all my original back pain has been elevated and I am able to return to the gym and high intensity sport with no past back issues whatsoever. Every day and week I continue to make great strides forward and return back to fitness and normality. Dr Lam and his team, provide an extremely caring approach from the initial contact to all the way through the post operative care plan. Dr Lam explains in great detail his thoughts, what the issues are, what can be expected from surgical intervention and what can be expected post op. From my experience of receiving treatment from Dr Lam, I would have no hesitation to recommend Dr Lam and his amazing team to anyone who required his experience and expertise. I can't thank him and his team enough for what they have done for me.

Mr Lam has been a wonderful consultant and surgeon. He was with my every step of the way on my journey to surgery and was always very clear in terms of risks and what each stage would involve. I never felt pressured into anything I wasn't comfortable with and always found him to fully explore and explain all options available but ultimately I felt confident that each decision was mine to make. Both before and after surgery he was always available if I had any questions or concerns and I am also very happy with the quality of work done, the scarring is very minimal and also very neat! I would highly recommend Mr Lam to anyone suffering from spinal issues.

    Lower Back Pain Spinal fusion
Mr. Khai Lam’s surgical intervention 100% cured my chronic back pain emanating from advanced degenerative disc degeneration. AND I had a delightful experience with all involved! I am an American and for various reasons, (some related to my international health insurance) I found it necessary to seek treatment outside the USA. I consulted with experts in the usual expat centers that are marketing heavily to foreigners for spinal surgeries: Germany and Barcelona. I am really comfortable in London and my insurance would cover me there, so I took a chance on consulting with Mr. Khai Lam at the London Bridge Hospital. Even without the insurance, the cost of this surgery in the UK via self-pay is quite reasonable: about a quarter of what the surgery and hospital stay would be in the USA! Worth every penny if you must self-pay to get your life back! Of all the world-renowned surgeons I asked to review my imaging and case, HE was the one who truly got the diagnosis right. And he DIDN’T tell me what I wanted to hear. Many of these surgeons said I was a “great candidate” for ADR (artificial disc replacement, or TDR, total disc replacement, i.e. with an M6, Active-L or other artificial disc). He took the time to carefully and CLOSELY review my imaging with an experienced, almost cynical eye… AND he was the only one to call me immediately for an unhurried, caring consultation to tell me why I was probably NOT a candidate for the ADR, though he would try “in situ” (during the surgery) to give me a disc. But only if it would help and not hurt. In fact, my having ADR might have solved one problem, but due to the destruction of my disc space and the troubled state of my facet joints, it could have caused more pain and new problems. An elegant, perfectly executed fusion surgery seemed the way forward. After a lot of resistance to the idea of a fusion, I was made to understand how a correctly angled “cage” would restore the disc space and my lordosis (in fact, I had a beautiful postural upgrade when all was said and done!). Proper stabilization could end my pain and the mechanics of the surgery could help avoid future adjacent disc syndrome (and more fusions). In November 2019 after a very VERY long period of daily episodes of painful spinal instability and my lifestyle and mentality in a downward spiral, I underwent an L5 S1 single-level ALIF (Anterior Lateral Interbody Fusion). Two days later, I had a robot-assisted posterior fusion fixation to reinforce the ALIF. This is the same surgery that Tiger Woods underwent, by the way. Mr. Lam visited me every day in hospital (I had a 5-night stay) and his consultations are thorough; his bedside manner is impeccable, warm, and he has a wonderful sense of humor. One could not do better. The London Bridge Hospital staff are top notch, as is the setting and services there (excellent food). Mr. Lam’s medical secretaries were responsive and helpful, and helped me push through with my insurance. For anyone reading this, I think it should be stated that when solving a painful condition: you need to take your medical research, your care, and your contact with your chosen surgeon firmly into your own hands. Often you need to be a bit forthright, get in touch, initiate the e-mails and calls (when they don’t return yours)…Push forward, and only go forward once you are totally comfortable with the surgeon, the diagnosis and the proposed procedure. It took me a long time to get all of this right, but my patience paid off. I got to be treated by one of a small handful of THE BEST spine surgeons in the world—one who is also contributing, teaching, researching and writing. Four weeks post-surgery, I am pain-free, flexible, and recovering extremely well. I credit Mr. Lam’s expertise with much of this. Thank you!

I recommend Mr Khai Lam without hesitation. After a road traffic collision some 19 years ago I had undergone many procedures previously. In view of his experience in spinal surgery I consulted with Mr Lam on total disc replacement options. Based on his advice I chose a Spinal Kinetics M6-L disc replacement at lumbar level L4/L5 in combination with fusion-cage at L5/S1 (both anterior) and subsequent fix/screws (posterior). 6 weeks post-op I experience less pain than for most of the last 19 years. I would consider myself a well informed and reasonably demanding patient. I found Mr Lam very personable and willing to explain options in terms I could understand. Also patient yet firm when I proposed approaches he did not consider would achieve the best outcome. Ultimately my informed choice was to place my faith in Mr Lam and he demonstrated great skill and care. I have no regrets and am delighted in the result, which even at only 6 weeks is better than I expected. I also found London Bridge Hospital to be excellent, a terrific well maintained facility with skilled and professional staff.

I am currently 6 weeks post OLIF with Mr. Lam and have a renewed enthusiasm and energy for life. I had been suffering from debilitating back pain which was getting progressively worse despite my commitment to physio. After a couple of consultations with Mr. Lam to examine the issue and consider the treatment options available, I decided to proceed with surgery. During my pre-op, Mr. Lam explained that he had considered my case further and that he was going to make a slight adjustment to my procedure, explaining the reasons for the change. In my view, this really demonstrates his commitment to treating each of his patients and their specific needs and taking the time needed to tailor the right solution. I am now virtually pain free and having now seen my before and after x-rays (which were astonishing) I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Lam (subject to the usual disclaimers).

I am so pleased I was referred to Mr Lam, who is a pioneer in spinal surgery. Last year he performed a double cervical vertebrae fusion on me which has been hugely successful. Then in July 2018 I had to have L5/S1 fused after a discectomy done in 2001 failed, the disc had virtually disintegrated. Mr Lam makes you feel so confident in his abilities and rightly so. It is still quite a big deal having spinal surgery but he makes you feel that it’s nothing to worry about - he has done so many disc replacements and fusions that it’s just another day at the office to him! A wonderful man who I would recommend to anyone who needs spinal surgery - you’re in the safest of hands. He’s a very charming man too who immediately puts you at ease, a real pleasure to be treated by him.

Mr Khai S Lam is a highly specialized spinal surgeon. What particularly impressed me was his anterior approach to a very difficult discectomy and fusion of L5/S1 which other neurosurgeons refused even to consider because of other local difficulties. He is very direct yet easily approachable. Based on my personal experience I can highly recommend him
