    About

Mr Jonathan Bird is a London orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in knee surgery. While studying at the UCL School of Medicine, where he eventually qualified from, Mr Bird joined the British Army. It was here that he saw firsthand the highest quality of medicine given to our military. He eventually qualified from UCL in 1997, and continued to serve until 2004, gaining experience while treating both soldiers and Iraqi civilians hurt by the conflict.

After leaving the army in 2004, Jonathan had more specialized orthopaedic training in London before taking his current NHS post at University Hospital Lewisham. It is also here that he is the premier knee surgeon and initiated the Acute Knee Service. At the same time, he also leads the undergraduate medical students at King’s College.

Mr. Bird is still always striving to improve his orthopaedic practice, going to conferences and learning the latest therapies and techniques for his clients. He can treat the knee injuries of elite athletes as well as someone suffering daily pain from arthritis. He’s always trying to give his patients the best care and improve their quality of life.

Mr Bird has operated on me twice (Knee Arthroscopy). On both occasions the outcome has been very good - I went from significant pain to minor niggles and can now manage my knee pain easily without drugs. Of course you have to put the effort in yourself with physio and exercise for rehabilitation but this can't start until the surgery is complete. All in all a very positive experience for me.

I visited Mr Bird to get a quick second opinion on my left knee pain given to me by my GP following an NHS X-RAY report. I found him a down to earth person to deal with who happily answered all my uninformed questions with patience and directness. He completed a hands on examination and suggested a now and then X-RAY followed by a face to face explanation of the results. Within a couple of hours he confirmed the happy news that knee surgery was not required and advised on future life style changes. His confirmation letter was with me the next day. Would 100% recommend Mr Bird to all who follow.

I Would highly recommend Mr Bird to anyone needing knee surgery. He explains everything thoroughly to do with the surgery, and following surgery he’s quite tough but I benefited from that greatly! Could not fault him from first consultation until 1 year later being discharged.
