Mr James Smellie is a Consultant Endocrine and General Surgeon with over 18 years of consultant experience. He is based at Chelsea and Westminster Foundation Trust Hospital, where he has built up a large thyroid surgical practice. He also sees private patients at the Lister Hospital and Chelsea Outpatient Centre.
He specialises in the treatment of thyroid, parathyroid and endocrine disease and hernia surgery. He has a specialist interest in umbilical hernia surgery, inguinal hernia, recurrent hernia and incisional hernia repairs.
After training at a number of prestigious units in London, Mr Smellie received his medical degree from the University of Cambridge, completing his USA foreign medical examinations at the same time. In 1992, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and undertook further training and research at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London and at renowned Medical College of Virginia and The Mayo Clinic in the USA. Mr Smellie received his Doctorate degree from the University of Cambridge and a for research into Cancer Radioimmunotherapy. He also received a specialist certificate in Endocrine Surgery from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of the UK.
As well as his consultancy work, he is actively involved in clinical research and has been widely published in peer-reviewed journals. He is regularly invited to speak on endocrine disease and cancer related topics.
Mr Smellie works closely with a strong team and is dedicated to providing most appropriate, research based care for all his patients.
