Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Mr Tailor has been an NHS Consultant Gynaecologist at Royal Surrey County Hospital (Guildford) and St Peters Hospital (Chertsey) since September 2003. As a sub-specialist in gynaecological oncology, his function is to see, investigate and treat patients referred by their GP with a suspicion of cancer.
Prior to specialising in oncology Mr Tailor completed his training in general gynaecology and conducted a 2 year research project into ovarian cancer screening using ultrasound scanning and developed an in-depth experience in scanning especially looking at ovarian cysts on scan and trying to predict whether a cyst is likely to be sinister or not. Mr Tailor has published articles on this subject and spoken at international meetings.
Because of his experience with scanning, Mr Tailor will often conduct an ultrasound scan during the consultation if it is required so that the patient is not inconvenienced with another separate appointment. This facilitates a faster patient pathway and fewer visits to the hospital.
As a cancer surgeon, he underwent intensive 3 year specialist training additional to the general gynaecology training to carry out very complex surgery using both open incision and keyhole surgery approaches. This experience has given him an intimate knowledge of the anatomy, careful handling of the tissues, a calm approach to handling intra-operative complications, and an ability to steer the patient through a complicated post-operative phase.
As a robotic surgeon, he has a vast experience in the use of the da Vinci robot having used multiple generations of the platform for more than 10 years. His department in Guildford has the biggest series of robotic gynaecological experience in the UK. Mr Tailor has trained numerous national and international trainees in robotic surgery. He was one of the original founders of the society of the British & Irish Association of Robotic Gynaecological Surgeons (BIARGS).
Mr Tailor is very fortunate to have a well-motivated and dedicated team around him. In the private sector, his patients have found it very helpful to be dealt with directly by himself for appointments and queries.
