



Speech and Language Therapy
Mrs Jemma Haines is a Consultant Speech and Language Therapist and she jointly runs the Elite Breathlessness Clinic at The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance. Her patients’ conditions include severe asthma, complex breathlessness, large airways collapse, chronic cough and elite athletes. She is the allied health professional upper airways lead for the North West Severe Asthma Network and North West Cough Network and works within the NHS at the North West Lung Centre at the University of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, a multi-disciplinary tertiary airways service, which treats patients with a variety of conditions.
Mrs Haines also chaired the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist’s position paper, ‘Speech and language therapy in adult respiratory care (2015) and she was appointed a RCSLT professional respiratory advisor in 2015. She was elected onto the RCSLT Professional Practice and Policy Committee (2015-2018), representing the membership and supporting the RCSLT board of trustees on professional issues.
She also has a strong interest in clinical research and with her team, is developing a research portfolio that includes identifying the optimal diagnostic pathway for patients with vocal cord dysfunction, refinement of a diagnostic questionnaire for vocal cord dysfunction and assessing non-pharmacological intervention for chronic cough management. She has attended numerous national and international conferences to present her work.
