    About

Jahangir (Jay) Ahmed is an experienced and highly regarded consultant in ENT, specialising in Head & Neck, Laryngology and Thyroid surgery at Barts-Health and UCLH NHS trusts. He is the current lead clinician for ENT at The Royal London Hospital, and a core member of the regional head and neck cancer and Thyroid MDTs.

Mr. Ahmed was educated at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College School of Medicine, graduating in 2001 with the Gold medal in Pathology. He also attained an MA in experimental psychology from Cambridge. He was awarded a PhD in molecular oncology (2015) for his work at The Barts Cancer Institute on harnessing viruses for immuno-therapy of cancer.

He completed higher surgical ENT training in London teaching hospitals including The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s, Charing Cross, The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. These are internationally recognized centres of excellence and academia, where he gained quality experience in the breadth and depth of ENT.

Mr. Ahmed has a high-volume practice and expertise in the surgical management of head and neck tumours from all subsites including tonsil, tongue, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), salivary gland and thyroid.

He is one of the core thyroid surgeons in the Barts Health Thyroid Multidisciplinary team (MDT); this is one of the largest thyroid cancer groups in the UK. He is one of the few surgeons on the panel designated to perform neck dissection in thyroid cancer patients with advanced disease.

Mr. Ahmed is skilled in transoral (scarless, through-the-mouth) laser and robotic surgery, with one of the highest-volume transoral robotic surgical practices in the UK.

He has significant experience in managing voice, complex airway and swallowing problems. Uniquely he runs a tertiary level practice in the surgical management of sleep disordered breathing ranging from snoring to severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) refractory to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Indeed, the team’s latest surgical audit has demonstrated tremendous success with 90% of OSA patients on CPAP who were treated by robotic surgery, not needing to use their CPAP machine post operatively.

Mr. Ahmed also performs a significant volume of advanced endoscopic sinus surgery, utilsing advanced technology such as image navigation and is therefore in a unique position to be able to offer safe, state of the art surgical treatment from nasal passage to voice box.

He has a keen research interest in minimally invasive transoral surgery and molecular treatment of cancers. He is a clinical lecturer at Queen Mary University of London. He has published over 30 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals and over 12 book chapters in respected surgical and basic scientific textbooks. His research and clinical experience are regularly presented at national and international meetings.

Mr. Ahmed is passionate about education. He holds a PGC in Medical education and is education co-lead at Bart’s health; facilitating a training program for North-Thames higher surgical trainees and junior doctors. He is also part of the faculty in a number of London based instructional training courses in ENT. His involvement in academia and teaching means he keeps abreast of the latest evidence-based treatment protocols and technology in ENT.

Mr. Ahmed has gained a reputation for providing the highest quality care to every patient he treats. He is a firm believer of personalized medicine and aims to provide bespoke, individualized treatment plans for his patients. He will be readily accessible throughout their clinical journey and beyond, to ensure as comfortable an experience as possible.

Outside of medical work, Mr Ahmed has an interest in reading history, gym training and duelling with his son on computer games consoles.

On January the 14th 2020 I was diagnosed with Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid gland and which is a rare and aggressive malignancy cancer (1 in 100,000) the operation which was a total parotidectomy, a mastoidectomy and a selective neck dissection with local flap coverage was set to be an intense 13 hours. Well, what can I say? Not only did Dr Ahmed save my life, he ensured that I didn’t lose my ear, my sight, my hearing or the structure of the side of my face. The scar is barely noticeable too which I am extremely happy about. Dr Ahmed is one of the best, if not the best. His aftercare, his personality and the fact at a relatively young age he can perform such intense operations is something that he and his team should be immensely proud of. Me and my family will never be able to thank Dr Ahmed enough for saving my life. A true life hero and forever in his debt.

I was suffering from a nasty severe ear infection which had re-occured . Mr J Ahmed treated me very well. He made sure he understood my concerns, studied my case in detail and used the right required treatment and approach. The fact that I liked about him was he called me for followups to make sure the treatment was working well which ultimately resulted in curing my infection. I highly recommend him.

My experience is going great with Mr Jahangir Ahmed. I was suffering from papilloma by birth on my vocal cords and I had operated in India 7-8 times in different different top hospitals. But again within 6 months papilloma comes again and increase more than before. But after only one surgery in November 2019 that is done by Dr Jahangir Ahmed, my papilloma is not seen on my vocal cords. My vocal cords are now smooth and he is referring me for speech therapist because I am using false vocal cord. I am very lucky that my surgery is done by Mr Jahangir Ahmed. Every time on my appointment he meet me with happy face and he is very polite. Every time guidance for positive improvement for my voice. I have no words about how I can be thankful of him because of him after 35 years I am now free from my throat problem. Today I am very glad to write something about him as a review. Thanks a lot Dr Jahangir Ahmed🙏

I have known Jay since his training days through our North Thames region, and I knew then that he'd go far. It is thus no surprise that he was snapped up to join Barts Health as a Consultant Head & Neck Surgeon. Jay now delivers a high-volume practice and tertiary-level expertise, and each patient always receives a bespoke and individualised treatment plan. And I can say that my onward tertiary referrals have immensely benefited from Jay's high quailty care.

Mr Ahmed is kind and skilled ENT/Head and neck surgeon. He is great at explaining medical jargon to patients in straight forward language. He has an incredible eye for detail and puts 100% effort into ensuring patients are well looked after. He is able to look after most ear, nose and throat conditions but has subspecialist training in head and neck cancer, including thyroid and voice problems. He is one of the few surgeons who is able to perform robotic oral surgery and has used this to treat patients with obstructive sleep apnoea with some patients no longer requiring a CPAP machine afterwards. Mr Ahmed is a trusted colleague and a leader in the medical field whose kind considerate bedside manner are matched by his fantastic surgical skills. I do recommend him to friends and family regularly.
