    About

Dr Shabbir Moochhala is a Consultant Nephrologist and Physician at NHS and private hospitals in North London. He has eight years' experience in all aspects of kidney disease, including acute kidney injury, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, transplantation and all forms of dialysis.

As well as being a specialist, he is also a practising general physician. This means that he has an excellent knowledge of common as well as rare diseases, so he often is consulted by patients whose problems span more than one specialty. He always tries to address all of his patients' medical needs, not just the kidney related ones.

Dr Moochhala trained in Edinburgh and Newcastle upon Tyne. He is also an expert in rare renal diseases, specifically rare kidney stone diseases, and is Principal Investigator for four international research trials. He teaches medical students and junior doctors, and gives lectures nationally on his specialist topics.

In addition to offering a comprehensive medical service to his patients, with a friendly approach, he is readily available and often able to give appointments at short notice, with rapid communication to both patients and referrers.

It is important that HCA is transparent about our relationship with those doctors who provide us with clinical guidance on delivering the best possible care to patients and operating our hospitals safely and efficiently. We set out here some of the ways in which we work together and the amount we pay this doctor for such services.

Dr Moochhala was at all times kindly, encouraging, and helpful. He explained things to us thoroughly and in language it was easy to understand. He followed my case from the ITU at the Royal Free Hospital to my discharge to home 120+ miles away, and then monitored my condition and managed my treatment via telephone consultations and video-conferences, collaborating and communicating well with my local GP surgery. Despite the difficulties presented by the Covid-19 lockdown, Dr. Moochhala continued to give me the excellent care, and careful monitoring I would not have received otherwise. Due largely to his expertise and confidence I was able to return home without fear, and have continued to make excellent progress. My next consultation and blood-tests are scheduled for 3 months from now - which gives you an idea of how well I am doing. Dialysis in ITU to a happy normal life in 31/2 months is more than I could have hoped for. I would recommend him without any hesitation!

I have complete confidence in Dr. Moochhala's professional knowledge. In my experience, he is accessible; he explains everything that a layman needs to know. He is approachable and if I have a query between consultations, I know his secretary will pass it on and will give me the answer in due course.
