    About

Dr Sam Dawkins is a cardiologist specialising in general cardiology, interventional cardiology and structural intervention, including transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), percutaneous mitral valve repair (MitraClip), PFO closure and left atrial appendage occlusion. He has expertise in cardiac CT and echocardiography offering a comprehensive service for both diagnosis and treatment. He can offer face-to-face, telephone and video consultations.

He trained in London and Oxford and then spent two years working at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, the busiest valve centre in the United States. He is one of the UK’s most experienced mitral valve operators, with expertise in percutaneous mitral valve repair and replacement. He also regularly trains other cardiologists in these procedures around the world.

He has a very broad experience in TAVI, with particular expertise in complex situations, including patients with previous aortic valve replacement or challenging vascular access.

He is the clinical lead for structural intervention in Oxford, with a busy practice consisting of coronary intervention, TAVI, MitraClip, closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO), atrial septal defect (ASD), left atrial appendage occlusion, closure of paravalvular leaks and cardiac CT.

Dr Dawkins treated me with respect and consideration. He took the time to explain the procedure clearly and in language I could understand. When I did seek clarification on anything I didn’t quite understand or remember properly he was quick to reply to any messages, giving me the reassurance I needed. He was never dismissive of me no matter what the question! I was confident going into the procedure as a result and the outcome has been truly life changing for me.

From the outset, I found Dr Dawkins professional, approachable and informative. At my initial consultation, he showed me on screen and talked me through the problem with my leaky mitral valve. He then explained the mitraclip procedure he recommended for me. I saw Dr.Dawkins on admission where he once more explained the procedure he would carry out and talked me through the risks but reassured me that they were rare. I saw Dr Dawkins post op and again the following morning and both he and I were pleased with the result of the procedure. I have made a full recovery and have seen Dr Dawkins for follow up. Dr Dawkins friendly manner which puts one immediately at ease and I would thoroughly recommend him.

Dr Dawkins undertook my paravalvar closure procedure in August 2020. He spent a long time explaining the technique and answering all my questions thoroughly. I was particularly interested in the likely improvement and was reassuring by stressing that I was a very suitable candidate for a positive outcome. He is very professional and has outstanding personal skills.

Dr Dawkins provided an outstanding service throughout my care, I would highly recommend him to anyone. Dr Dawkins took the time to provide me with a detailed breakdown of the treatment including risk factors with associated probability of them occurring and remedial steps for resolution. In addition the after surgery care was top draw.
