Marcus Harbord was appointed a Consultant Physician &
Gastroenterologist at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in 2006,
specialising in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colorectal cancer and
colonoscopy. He was lead clinician of the Gastroenterology Department 2007-2016.
He was previously a consultant physician at the Royal Free Hospital.
After leaving Eton College, he completed medical studies at St Mary's
Hospital, London in 1992, with further training at UCL, the Royal Free, and St
Mark’s Hospital. He was awarded a PhD in biochemistry by UCL in 2002. He was an
editorial board member of Inflammatory
Bowel Disease 2006-2016; chairman of the New Consultants’ Committee at the
Royal College of Physicians 2009-2011; an elected member of the European
Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) guidelines committee 2013-2016 and
chairman of this committee 2015-2016. He is responsible for two new European guidelines, Extra-intestinal manifestations in IBD (2016) and Ulcerative colitis (2017).
He is the main author of the ECCO e-guide, a web-based global learning resource that has
converted all ECCO guidelines into an interactive, algorithmic learning tool. He is co-author of a textbook, Emergencies in Gastroenterology & Hepatology,
published by Oxford University Press in 2013. He is principle investigator for
the UK twin IBD registry, undertaking collaborative studies with other European
centres in epigenetics and metabolomics. In 2019 he founded WikiMed LDA, a
not-for-profit, Med-Tech initiative to provide medical diagnosis and healthcare
advice for the poorest people in the world. He lives between London and Lisbon.
