Dr Christos Toumpanakis is a Consultant in Gastroenterology and Neuroendocrine Tumours at the Neuroendocrine Tumour Unit - ENETS Centre of Excellence of Royal Free Hospital, London, since 2007. He qualified from Medical School - University of Athens, Greece, in 1994, completed his speciality training in Gastroenterology & Hepatology in 2004, and obtained his PhD degree from the University of Athens in 2007. Dr Toumpanakis is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College of London and has been awarded as “Top-Teacher of the Year” several years in a row.
Dr Toumpanakis sees patients with all general gastrointestinal conditions including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, celiac disease, chronic diarrhoea, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and gastrointestinal problems in patients with congenital immuno-deficiencies. He subspecialises in neuroendocrine (carcinoid) tumours (NETs) and is considered as one of the International experts in that field.
Dr Toumpanakis has a keen interest in research and leads a NET Clinical Research Group. His research focus is on novel biomarkers and molecular imaging in NETs, mesenteric fibrosis and carcinoid heart disease. He has co-authored numerous publications and presents regularly at national and international conferences. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS) and the UK NET patients foundation, the Editor of ENETS CME program, a co-author of ENETS, UK & Ireland NET Guidelines.
