



Gastroenterology
Dr Ayesha Akbar is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at St Mark's Hospital. She qualified from the University of Manchester with honours and undertook her specialist training in gastroenterology in London. She obtained her PhD degree from Imperial College London studying the molecular mechanisms of visceral hypersensitivity in the colon. Dr Akbar has received numerous prestigious awards for her work and she holds several management roles.
Dr Akbar offers the management of all general gastrointestinal pathologies. Her focus is on inflammatory bowel disease and she has a particular interest in abdominal pain and irritable bowel syndrome. She sub-specialises in neurogastroenterology and is a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology Neurogastroenterology committee.
Dr Akbar is actively involved in research, education and training. She has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents at national and international conferences. She is the national Education Chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology and Research and Development Director for London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.
