He graduated from the University of Pavia in Italy in 1991 and commenced his specialist neurological training there. He then moved to the UK to continue training and refine his expertise in his chosen field, going on to enrol on to a PhD in molecular neurobiology at Imperial College London.

He has been a Consultant Neurologist at Barts Health and Basildon University Hospital since 2001, with an active role in Clinical Neurology and Neurophysiology and research interests in neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders. In 2009, he has founded the Royal London (now Barts Health) MND Care and Research Centre, where he is currently the Co-Director. He has been the MND Research Director for DeNDRoN and for the LCRN North-Thames. Since 2015, as Reader in Clinical Neurology, he has led a multidisciplinary research group working on biomarkers and novel therapeutics discovery and has been a formal member of the UCLPartners network steering group.

In 2019, as Professor of Neurology, he has established the Neurodegeneration group at the Blizard Institute and he has been part of the clinical research unit of the newly created ALS Centre at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen Square Motor Neuron Disease Centre). He has a broad exposure to general neurology and he is leading neuromuscular clinics with a focus on care and research, supporting nation-wide and international biobanking projects for biomarkers discovery.
