



Gastroenterology
Professor Ailsa Hart is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Director of St Mark’s Hospital Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research. She is Sub-Dean of St Mark’s Hospital Academic Institute, Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College and Chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology Gut Microbiota for Health Group.
Professor Hart qualified with honours from Oxford University in 1992 and was awarded the George Pickering Prize for Medicine and Surgery Proxime Accessit in 1995 for extraordinary achievements. She trained in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine in London and Amsterdam. She obtained her PhD from Imperial College in 2005 and become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2013.
Professor Hart has expertise in all aspects of gastroenterology. She has a particular clinical interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - ulcerative colitis and Chron's disease.
Professor Hart is actively involved in research with a particular focus on intestinal immunology and bacteriology (role and modulation of the microbiome). She has co-authored two books and more than 130 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. She regularly presents at national and international conferences.
