Mr Sam Gidwani is a Consultant Hand and Wrist surgeon, based at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals, London. His practice is focused entirely on disorders and injuries of the hand, wrist and forearm. He regularly treats musicians, as well as professional and amateur sportsmen and women, and was one of the surgeons dealing with athletes’ hand and wrist injuries during the 2012 London Olympics.

Mr Gidwani completed his orthopaedic training in 2006, and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma & Orthopaedics). He then spent two years in further training at specialist hand and wrist centres including the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby, and the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. This period of training culminated in the award of the British Hand Surgery Diploma. He began his consultant career at Guy's & St Thomas' in 2009. Between 2014 and 2017, he was the Clinical Lead of the Guy's Orthopaedic Department, one of the largest and busiest units in London.

As well as being a busy clinician, Mr Gidwani is actively involved in the training of junior surgeons: he serves on the British Hand Surgery Society’s Instructional Course Committee, and is co-founder and convener of the St Thomas’ cadaveric hand trauma course. He keeps his own knowledge and skills up-to-date by regular attendance at national and international conferences, whether as a delegate or member of the teaching faculty. His research interests include the treatment of scaphoid fractures, and the use of joint replacement in the hand and wrist.

Lorenzo Garagnani is a highly specialised Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon, one of the few surgeons treating the whole spectrum of disorders of the hand, wrist and peripheral nerves of the upper limb both in adults and children. Mr Arsan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in all aspects of the treatment of hand & wrist disorders as well as treatment of the injured elbow.

Matay grew up in the Netherlands and graduated from medical school at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam and completed his Trauma & Orthopaedic surgical training in Germany. He continued his sub-speciality training through an intensive 3-year hand surgery training at the Hand Zentrum Lingen, a renowned hand centre in Lower Saxony, under the supervision of Dr M. Nicoloff, a leading total-wrist arthroplasty surgeon in Germany. He was then appointed Lead Hand Surgeon of the Trauma & Orthopaedics Department of St. Bonifatius Hospital. Matay gained experience working in the academic teaching hospitals of North Rhine-Westphalia, affiliated to the University of Münster, where his post incorporated trauma and management of both non-operative & operative management of high/low-velocity injuries as well as sports injuries.

Matay has been a substantive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon since 2012. He developed a modern and successful upper limb service for occupational accidents at the St. Bonifatius Hospital as well as St. Christophorus Clinic.

Matay is currently the Lead Hand Surgeon at the Homerton University Hospital. His interests incorporate the complete field of hand & wrist surgery as well as management of elbow disorders.

Mr Mark Phillips is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with specialist interest in hand and wrist surgery as well as trauma surgery. Having worked in a major trauma centre (Kings’ College hospital) for many years, he has acquired a host of skills in looking after patients with complex fractures and injuries.

He qualified in Cambridge in 1989 and after basic surgical training and a research post at the Royal Free Hospital, he completed specialist training in Orthopaedics & Trauma on the King’s College Hospital rotation. After higher surgical training, he completed two fellowships: one in Hand Surgery in the Plastic Surgical Department at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, and a second in fracture reconstruction in the University of Pisa, Italy.

After 14 years as an NHS Consultant, the last 12 of which at King’s College Hospital, he now exclusively consults privately.

Mr Phillips is an enthusiastic teacher and has taught at all levels to the public, allied healthcare professionals, medical students and to other consultants. As well as convening courses related to complex fracture management, he has been invited to be a faculty member at meetings around the UK and across Europe.

His main area of academic interest at King's was related to the management of bone defects created by high-energy trauma and the use of technology such as growth factors to enhance healing.

In the last few years he has specialised increasingly in Upper Limb surgery, and is now exclusively specialising in Adult Hand, Wrist and Elbow conditions. He is further highly subspecialised in that he has an interest in treating musicians and this work now comprises a large part of his practice.
