Mr Deshpande joined King's College Hospital as a consultant in 2007, where he is now a senior consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Having trained in the South-East Thames London Cardiothoracic Surgical Programme he received a prestigious scholarship from the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons to work in OLV Zeinkenhaus, Belgium to learn port-access endoscopic mitral valve repair surgery for mitral valve prolapse. In 2006, Mr Deshpande was appointed as Senior Registrar in Advanced Aortic & Robotic Cardiac Surgery at London's Royal Brompton Hospital.

On top of a wealth of expertise in general cardiothoracic surgery, Mr Deshpande is highly specialised in Minimally Invasive (Key Hole) Cardiac & Thoracic Surgery. He is well known for his use of bilateral internal mammary arteries for coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) to achieve near-total arterial re-vascularisation for ischemic heart disease. Mr Chris Young qualified in 1980 from Sheffield University Medical School. His cardiothoracic training was undertaken at St Bartholomew's Hospital, St Thomas Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and Queen Elizabeth in Birmingham. He undertook two years research at the Rayne Institute, St Thomas' as a BHF Junior Research Fellow, being awarded an MD for studies in myocardial protection.

Mr Young's areas of specialist surgical expertise including all aspects of surgery of the aortic valve; including homograft insertion, aortic valve repair and valve-sparing techniques, keyhole surgery, aortic root replacement and especially the innovative transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). St Thomas' has the largest UK experience of this new valve technique and Mr Young is one of only two surgeons involved in the programme. He has pioneered the introduction of TAVI at London Bridge Hospital.

His other area of specialist interest is in surgery for thoracic aortic aneurysm disease; including aortic dissection, aortic arch replacement, hybrid vascular procedures and endovascular stenting. Chris monitors patients long term in aortic surveillance clinics.

It is important that HCA is transparent about our relationship with those doctors who provide us with clinical guidance on delivering the best possible care to patients and operating our hospitals safely and efficiently. We set out here some of the ways in which we work together and the amount we pay this doctor for such services.

Mr Max Baghai graduated in 1996 from Imperial College Medical School in London. After completing his basic surgical training at Guy’s and St Thomas hospital, he started his training in cardiothoracic surgery within the London deanery. During his training, he was awarded a clinical fellowship by the British Heart Foundation to complete a PhD at King’s College London. His research evolved around techniques in preserving heart muscle during congenital cardiac surgery.

After completing his training and passing the board exams in 2011, he was awarded the Ethicon scholarship by the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons in the UK which provided the opportunity for him to go on a fellowship to Hong Kong. During the fellowship, he gained experience in complex cardiac and minimal access surgery, which has paved the way for his current practice in London. He has been a consultant at King’s College Hospital since 2012 where he went on to build the minimal access program in cardiac surgery and the unit provides one of the largest and most diverse programs in the country. He is currently the clinical lead in cardiac surgery and his main aim is to build on what is already a world-class department.
