Dr James Mackay is the only accredited Consultant Clinical Genetic Oncologist with a special interest in cancer genetics in the UK His clinical interests are cancer genetics, inherited cancer, cancer screening and the introduction of complex genetic tests into clinical cancer care.


Dr Mackay established regional cancer genetics services in East Anglia and North East Thames and developed a remote cancer genetics service, using real time tele-conferencing technology, based in Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust. 

 

Dr Mackay is an honorary senior lecturer in the Research Department of Oncology, The Cancer Institute, University College London. He was the clinical principal investigator of an evaluation of regular mammography in women under 50 with a family history of breast cancer funded by the NHS Research and Development Programme, the results of which have now been published. He also initiated the Genetic Breast Cancer Trial, which is a trial of chemotherapy in women with breast cancer, who carry a faulty breast cancer gene, the first randomised trial of chemotherapy based on inherited genetic make-up in the world.

Professor Mary O’Brien was born in Northern Ireland and studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin. She works as a medical oncologist in the NHS at The Royal Marsden in Sutton, Surrey.

Professor O’Brien treats breast and lung cancer including mesothelioma. Professor Jonathan Waxman trained at University College and University College Hospital, London, in common with a number of other consultants practising at LOC. He was the recipient of several scholarships and prizes as an undergraduate and postgraduate. He is currently Professor of Oncology at Imperial College London and consultant to the Department of Oncology at Hammersmith Hospital, for whom he played the central role in the campaign to build the Hammersmith Cancer Centre.

He founded the Prostate Cancer Charity which will raise £20m in this current financial year. Prior to joining the Hammersmith Hospital, he was an Imperial Cancer Research Fund Research Fellow at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

His current clinical and laboratory research focus is prostate cancer. He has written over 400 research papers and book chapters, has authored eleven medical books, one novel, a patient information book and a legal text book. He writes on healthcare policy for major newspapers.
