Clinical interests

1.Gastric pacing / Gastric Electrical Stimulation for gastroparesis – has established Broomfield Hospital as the National Centre for UK. Receive referrals from England, Ireland and Wales. The unit has the biggest series of patients outside USA. Outcome data from interventions have been presented at National and International meetings.

2. Physiology of the Stomach and Oesophagus – has established a laboratory at Broomfield Hospital for testing the functions of oesophagus and stomach. The laboratory also has the potential for attracting undergraduate and postgraduate students for Masters and PhD thesis.

3.Capsule Endoscopy – Part of the team that invented the capsule endoscopy at the Royal London Hospital. Has established this service at Broomfield Hospital.

4.Oesophageal and Gastric cancer – Set up Broomfield as the cancer centre for Essex through a successful bidding process in 2003. Now covers 5 acute hospitals with a population of 2 million.

5.Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery – The unit performs advanced minimally invasive surgery using both robotic and laparoscopic surgery for both benign and malignant disease of the oesophagus and stomach. I am the first UK upper GI surgeon to be accredited to perform robotic surgery and as a consequence be a mentor. I have performed over 120 robotic operations. I also perform complex benign oesophageal surgery such as revision fundoplications, Robotic Heller’s myotomy and giant para-oesophageal herniae repair.

6.Endoluminal Surgery –I did original work as part of my PhD thesis on endoluminal surgical techniques. Our group pioneered surgical techniques that have become routine practice in the past 12 years.

Professor Marc Winslet is Clinical Head of Surgery and Clinical Lead for Colorectal Surgery at the Royal Free and Head of Department of Upper GI Surgery at UCLH. He is also Head of the North London Cancer Network Upper GI Tumour Board. 

Professor Winslet qualified from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London, in 1981. He undertook training in General Surgery and was appointed FRCS Eng, FRCS Edinburgh in 1985. He obtained a Master of Surgery degree from the University of London in 1987 and became Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1988.

Professor Winslet has extensive experience in all areas of general surgery, particularly in oesophagogastric and colorectal surgery, and is widely renowned for his contributions to the field. He has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed articles, multiple textbook chapters and has written and edited four surgical textbooks. He regularly lectures in the UK and abroad. 

Professor Winslet is a member of the most prestigious national and international surgeon associations including Council of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland, Section of Coloproctology, Royal Society Medicine, Association of Upper GI Surgeons of Great Britain & & Ireland, Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland.

Dr Sara McCartney is a consultant gastroenterologist at The Wellington Hospital with special interests in general gastroenterology, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, IBS, diverticular disease, bowel cancer screening and adolescent gastroenterology.

Dr McCartney is an accreditated bowel cancer screening colonoscopist in the National screening programme and is an examiner in colonoscopic accreditation. Dr Abhi Lall is a Consultant Neonatologist and Paediatrician practicing at the Portland Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. He has held memberships with the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. More impressively, he has completed an MSc in Clinical Paediatrics in 1999 and a fellowship in 2008.

Mr Michael Machesney is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at a NHS Trust and he also sees patients privately. He specialises in Colorectal Cancer services.

Mr Machesney is chair of the Colorectal Cancer Clinical Reference Group (CRG) for NHS England, which aims to improve the patient experience, safety and early diagnosis. He is also the Pathway Director for Colorectal Cancer at London Cancer, an integrated cancer system (ICS) resulting from the amalgamation of the North East London Cancer Network (NELCN) and the North Central London and West Essex Cancer Network (NCLWECN) following the Cancer Review for London (CRL). He is involved with National Peer Review and has been a CQC Hospital Inspector and is on the Clinical Advisory Board of Bowel Cancer UK.

He has been in consultant practice as a surgeon since 2003 and for the first nine years of his appointment was Lead Clinician for Colorectal Cancer at Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust and he built a team that was an early adopter of laparoscopic surgery and enhanced recovery for colorectal patients. Whipps Cross was recorded in the CRL Case for Change document (2008) to have had the second highest rate for laparoscopic surgery and the lowest length of stay for colectomy in the capital. He also commissioned and participated in the implementation of a triage straight to test pathway for patients with colorectal symptoms at Whipps Cross, which was shortlisted for a BMJ Award in 2014.
