Dr Christos TOUMPANAKIS MD, PhD, FRCP, FEBGH, AGAF is a Consultant in Gastroenterology & Neuroendocrine Tumours (NET) at the Neuroendocrine Tumour Unit – ENETS Centre of Excellence of Royal Free Hospital, London, UK, since 2007. He is also an Honorary Associate Professor at University College of London (UCL) and has been awarded 7 times, as “Top-Teacher of the Year”. He graduated from Medical School-University of Athens, Greece in 1994, obtained his Specialty Title in Gastroenterology & Hepatology in 2004, and his PhD from University of Athens in 2007. He has been involved in the area of NET since 2000. He is lecturing on a regular basis in several National & International Conferences and published > 100 original papers and Reviews.

He is the Chair of the Advisory Board of the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS), co-Chair of the Post-Graduate Course of ENETS annual Conference, co-Editor of ENETS CME program, co-Author of UK and Ireland NET Society & European NET Society Guidelines, associate Editor of “Journal of Neuroendocrinology”, as well as a member of the Advisory Board of the “UK NET patients’ foundation”.

He is leading a NET Clinical Research Group, involving Junior Doctors and UCL Medical Students in NET Clinical research projects. His main research interests include novel NET biomarkers, molecular imaging in NETs, and carcinoid heart disease. In 2014, he organized the 1st International Conference for “Carcinoid Heart Disease” in London, which led to the development of an International Network of experts, who published the first ever International management guidelines for Carcinoid Heart Disease in March 2017.

Apart from NET, Dr Toumpanakis sees patients with all general gastrointestinal conditions including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, celiac disease, chronic diarrhoea, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and gastrointestinal problems in patients with congenital immuno-deficiencies.

Dr Waseem Ashraf is a highly experienced consultant gastroenterologist. His specialist interest is in minimally-invasive techniques, such as endoscopy. He was one of the earliest capsule endoscopy operators in the world, giving him extensive expertise in this area.

Following completion of his Fellowship in Gastroenterology from the University of Nebraska Medical Centre, USA, he was took up his consultant post in gastroenterology in the UK in 1995. Throughout his career, Dr Ashraf has been active in research and has authored a number of research articles in peer-reviewed journals and also has more than 30 scientific abstract publications and a further two book chapters. 

Dr Ashraf is very experienced with endoscopic diagnostics and therapeutic techniques, in particular endoscopic treatments which minimise the need for surgery, in some cases. In addition he is particularly experienced in carrying out procedures relating to the stomach, colon, small intestine, pancreas and bile ducts. His main clinical interests include minimally-invasive procedures, bowel disease, colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and other gastrointestinal conditions.

Dr Natalie Direkze is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and General Physician. She qualified with a degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge University. Training posts in London followed and a PhD at Cancer Research UK concentrating on stem cell biology and pancreatic cancer.

Dr Direkze is experienced in the assessment, diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancer and the management of IBS. She is an experienced endoscopist and performs gastroscopy, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy. Direkzeis a National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme accredited colonoscopist and is looking forward to developing her roles in research and teaching at St Mary's.

Dr Dr Alastair O'Brien is a Consultant Hepatologist specialising in Hepato Pancreato Biliary Medicine.

After qualifying from Guys and St Thomas' Medical School in 1994, he completed gastroenterology and general medicine training on the South Thames rotation. Following this, he undertook his hepatology training at King's College, The Royal London and University College London Hospitals (UCLH). He was a Medical Research Council clinical training fellow at University College London and was awarded a PhD for his research into the use of terlipressin as rescue therapy for septic shock.

In 2007, Dr O’Brien was appointed as Consultant and Clinical Senior Lecturer in Hepatology at UCLH and The Royal Free Hospitals. At ULCH he is responsible for the inpatient management of all causes of acute and chronic liver disease. He runs an outpatients clinic at the Royal Free Hospital and sees patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, viral hepatitis (B & C), metabolic and alcohol related liver disease. He also has extensive experience in upper GI endoscopy especially management of variceal bleeding.

Dr O’Brien has been published in a number of leading journals including Nature Medicine, The Lancet, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Proceedings of The National Academy of Science. He was recently awarded funding for £1.6million by the Wellcome Trust and Department of Health to build a multi-centre clinical trial to prevent infection in cirrhosis patients. He has also gained funding from the Medical Research Council, The UCLH Biomedical Research Centre, and Industry (Pfizer).

Dr Sara McCartney is a consultant gastroenterologist at The Wellington Hospital with special interests in general gastroenterology, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, IBS, diverticular disease, bowel cancer screening and adolescent gastroenterology.

Anton Emmanuel obtained his medical degree from London University. He is an academic Neuro-Gastroenterologist at University College London and Consultant Gastroenterologist at University College Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen Square).
