Electrophysiology, Interventional Cardiology

Dr Jonathan Byrne has been a Consultant Cardiologist at King’s College Hospital since 2008. Dr Byrne completed his undergraduate medical training in Bristol and then continued general professional medical training in the South East of England and London. He was awarded a PhD in the academic department of Cardiology at King’s College Hospital in 2004. He completed extensive training in interventional cardiology at King’s College Hospital from 2004 and continued this along with transoesophageal echocardiography and cardiac CT scanning training on Vancouver Island, Canada in 2006 as an international fellow.

Alongside a wealth of general cardiology experience including the assessment and treatment of coronary and valvular heart disease and risk stratification he also treats hypertension and general heart rhythm disturbances, patients with angina, heart failure and high blood pressure. Dr Byrne is an interventional cardiologist who specialises in the treatment of coronary artery disease. This includes the treatment of narrowed, diseased heart arteries with angioplasty and stents, with the majority of procedures performed form the radial (wrist). He also treats patients with valvular heart disease with new treatments which do not require an operation, such as TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) and Mitraclip (percutaneous treatment of the mitral valve). As well as coronary and structural intervention he also carries out a number of imaging tests for the heart including transoesophageal echocardiography and cardiac CT scanning to screen and assess patients with the potential coronary disease.

Since his appointment as a consultant in 2008, he has also been pioneering in the development of the structural programme at Kings College Hospital, with the use of novel percutaneous techniques to treat aortic and mitral valve disease.

His research interests have included the molecular mechanisms which underlie the development of left ventricular hypertrophy and the application of coronary physiology in an interventional setting. His research has also explored the differences and potential advantages of intervention performed from the radial artery.

Outside of work Dr Byrne enjoys music, both listening and playing! He is currently re-learning the piano. If he’s not practicing the piano he can be found cycling, playing tennis or skiing.

Dr Piyush Jain is a consultant cardiologist currently working at the private practices at Spire Bushey and Harpenden, HCA Wellington and Elstree Waterfront centre as well as OSD healthcare in Hemel hempstead. His NHS base is West Hertfordshire Hospitals. He has been a consultant cardiologist at West Hertfordshire NHS Trust since 2017 and is currently the departmental lead for echocardiography as well as the lead for clinical governance.

Dr Jain attained his first medical qualification in 2000. He completed his medical training in North London, at hospitals including Royal Brompton and Harefield Trusts as well the Barnet and Chase Farm hospitals, obtaining MRCP in 2010. He further trained at District General Hospitals and Essex cardiothoracic centre where he trained advanced cardiac imaging (Cardiac CT, Echocardiography). He now trains registars in these specialist techniques and teaches on advanced CT courses.

In 2015 he completed an MD (Research) at Imperial College London. His work was supported by the prestigious Dorothy Hodgkin Post Graduate award.  The research was to evaluate ethnic differences in markers of subclinical atherosclerosis using cardiac imaging (coronary calcium, echocardiography and  myocardial perfusion), as well as inflammation (C-reactive protein). The aim of the study was to assess the potential of such markers in early identification of subjects at risk of coronary events.  He has presented his research at local and international conferences as well as published in high impact peer reviewed journals.

Dr Jain has many professional memberships including Royal College of Physicians, British Cardiovascular Society, European Society of Cardiology, British Society of Echocardiography, European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and British Heart Valve Society.

While he see patients with all aspects of cardiac pathology, he has a special interest in advanced imaging (Echo, stress echo, Transoesophageal echo and cardiac CT).

He enjoys interaction with patients and spend as much time with them as needed to get to a clear diagnosis and clarification of all the findings and diagnosis to the patient. He ensures that they understand their disease, prognosis and future plans as well as rational for ongoing treatment. This allows for individualized medicine as far as possible, as well as shared decision making.
