Mr Mokawem is a consultant spinal surgeon, specialising in all aspects of spinal surgery with a particular interest in paediatric and adult spine deformities. He advises on non-operative and operative management and supports patients in making fully informed decisions. He uses minimally invasive techniques, computer navigated surgery, robotic surgery and traditional open techniques as appropriate. His paediatric scoliosis practice encompasses the full repertoire of management strategies including vertebral body tethering in selective cases.

Mr Mokawem completed the prestigious National Spine Surgery Fellowship at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals in 2018. This is a combined neurosurgical and orthopaedic spine surgery fellowship which covers the breadth of spinal surgery and the full spectrum of spinal conditions in both paediatric and adult patients. Additionally, he completed a complex spine surgery fellowship at the internationally recognised Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in 2017. This included minimally invasive and computer navigated surgery with Mr Robert Lee, paediatric deformity surgery with Mr Jan Lehovsky and spinal tumour surgery with Mr Hanny Anwar.

He undertook an educational visit in September 2018 to the Eifelklinik in Germany to learn about vertebral body tethering.

Mr Mokawem has presented at national and international spine surgery conferences and has published in peer-reviewed journals.

Mr Andrew Forester is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon working for the Imperial College Healthcare Trust. He qualified from the University of Leicester in 1984, before taking his higher surgical training in Northwest Thames. His main area of interest includes minimally invasive treatment/arthroscopic surgery, particularly for frozen shoulder, stiff elbow, rotator cuff pathology and instability. He is an expert in upper limb reconstructive procedures, including joint replacement surgery, and offers a full range of both open and arthroscopic management.

Mr Forester is actively involved in teaching and training of surgical residents and general practitioners. He is a member of the Faculty of Examiners for the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh and takes an active part in post-graduate training.

Toby studied medicine at Oxford University (St. Edmund Hall) and completed his clinical studies at University College London. He undertook his early surgical training on the Kings College rotation as well working at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. Following an additional year of research into shoulder surgery and in particular the analysis of outcomes he was appointed onto the London higher Orthopaedic training rotation where he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. 

Toby has also undertaken two recognised sub-specialist fellowship trainings in shoulder and trauma surgery. The first at the internationally renowned Cape Shoulder Institute in Cape Town and at the University of Stellenbosch, and the second at Kings College Hospital – a nationally recognised upper limb and major trauma surgery fellowship. Toby has a particular in interest in outcomes, and consequently completed the Value Based Healthcare course at Harvard Business School. Leveraging this knowledge he has helped to re-design a number of NHS services and continues to provide healthcare advisory support to providers and commissioners of healthcare as a subject matter expert particularly in the field of musculoskeletal outcomes and value delivery.

Toby is active in the world of research and education having presented widely at national and international conferences and has published over 20 papers as well writing book chapters for international shoulder textbooks. He has designed and led several studies into restructuring and delivering Trauma and Orthopaedic services as well as producing shoulder research that led to the award of an MSc in Orthopaedics. He also provides peer review support to internationally recognised journals. He is part of the Kings College Hospital FRCS faculty and provides academic support to the department’s trainees. Toby also actively participates in charity work and is a keen sportsman with a particular interest in rugby and rowing having played at university, regional and national levels. However these days this is from the side-lines rather than on the pitch itself whilst supporting his children.
