He has received highly specialist training in surgery for hip dysplasia at Guy’s Hospital in London and is lead for the adult peri-acetabular osteotomy service in Oxford.

Research

Simon is a firm believer in offering patients evidence based treatments. He is actively involved in developing the evidence base in hip and knee surgery through leading and participating in research projects. He has produced over 60 papers and conference presentations. He has been awarded multiple prizes for his research work. He is actively involved in hip and knee research projects at the University of Oxford, Imperial College London and Bournemouth University.

Simon lives in West London, he spends most of his free time trying to keep up with his three young sons.

Additionally, he completed a complex spine surgery fellowship at the internationally recognised Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in 2017. This included minimally invasive and computer navigated surgery with Mr Robert Lee, paediatric deformity surgery with Mr Jan Lehovsky and spinal tumour surgery with Mr Hanny Anwar.

He undertook an educational visit in September 2018 to the Eifelklinik in Germany to learn about vertebral body tethering.

Mr Mokawem has presented at national and international spine surgery conferences and has published in peer-reviewed journals.

He is passionate about teaching and is a faculty member for the Royal College of Surgeons of England Advanced Trauma Life Support and Training the Trainers courses.

Outside of work he spends as much time as possible with his wife and daughters, cycling along traffic free routes.
