Dr Emma Roisin Woodward studied medicine at the University of Cambridge. Whilst undertaking her medical studies, she achieved a PhD in hereditary cancer genetics, graduating in 1999 with MB BChir PhD. Following general adult medicine rotations in London, Lausanne and Belfast Dr Woodward achieved MRCP in 2003.

Knowing that she wished to pursue a career in hereditary cancer genetics Dr Woodward commenced Specialist Registrar Training in Clinical Genetics in the West Midlands. During this time Dr Woodward was awarded a prestigious NIHR Clinician Scientist Award where she studied the hereditary predisposition to renal cancer. Dr Emma Woodward achieved her CCT in Clinical Genetics in 2008 combining research with an honorary consultant position.

In 2015 Dr Woodward accepted a consultant position in the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Her clinical practice includes all aspects of hereditary cancer predisposition including the more common cancers such as breast, ovarian and bowel cancer, in addition to rarer cancers, for example, endocrine tumours and renal cancer. Dr Woodward is pursuing research projects in the hereditary aspects of thyroid cancers and work collaboratively on projects investigating hereditary aspects of breast cancer and also endocrine tumour predisposition. Dr Woodward has more than 30 peer-reviewed publications including both as first, senior and co-author.

She is the current Chair of the Scientific Programme Committee for the British Society of Genetic Medicine and, in 2016, was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.

Mr Mohammed Saeed is a highly experienced General and Colorectal Surgeon. He treats a wide range of disorders including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, gallstones and hernias. He specialises in haemorrhoidal artery ligation surgery, sportsman's hernia and metabolic response to sepsis.

After graduating from the University of Manchester in 1988, he undertook his surgical training in the Manchester hospitals and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1992. He went on to complete specialist training in colorectal surgery and in 1999 he was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) research degree from the University of Manchester. In 2001 he was appointed Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Stepping Hill Hospital, where he is now the Clinical Lead for Colorectal Cancer Surgery and Head of Department of Endoscopy.


Mr Saeed is one of the few surgeons in the UK and first in Manchester to routinely perform the HALO operation (minimally invasive surgery for haemorrhoids) and is a trainer for this technique.

He is actively involved in the teaching and training of new surgeons and is a tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons.

Dr Mark Saunders is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. His main area of interest is in running clinical trials and evaluating novel agents with associated response/toxicity biomarkers and radiology (colorectal and anal cancer and pseudomyxoma). Dr Saunders is a member of a number of  National Cancer Research Network (NCRN) CRC committees and works with SchAAR to prepare material for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Dr Saunders obtained his medical degree from Charing Cross Hospital in 1986 and followed this with further training at teaching hospitals in London. He spent five years working in general medicine before specialising in oncology, firstly at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford and later at The Christie in Manchester. During his time as an Imperial Cancer Research Fund Fellow at the Churchill Hospital, he gained a Medical Research Council (MRC) grant to fund work that led to his PhD, entitled 'The application of gene therapy to selectively enhance tumor cell kill by bioreductive drugs', which he completed in 1999.

He received the Karol Sicher Research Fellowship, awarded by the UK Royal College of Radiologists, which allowed him to spend three months working with Professor Ralph Weichselbaum at the University of Chicago. He became a consultant at The Christie in 1999.

He also chairs or is a member of a number of Trial Management Groups (TMGs) and Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs). Dr Saunders is a member of number of NCRN and CRUK committees and chairs the Northern Cancer Drug Fund (CDF) committee. He is also an adviser to the charity, Beating Bowel Cancer.

Mr Malcolm Wilson is a Consultant Colorectal and Pelvic Oncological Surgeon in Manchester.

He completed his medical and surgical training in London, Manchester and Fort Lauderdale in Florida. Following this he undertook research into colorectal cancer proliferation and was awarded an MD by the University of London.

Mr Wilson took up his first consultant post in 1998 at East Cheshire and Stockport NHS Trusts. In April 2000 he was made a Consultant Colorectal and Pelvic Oncological Surgeon at The Christie, and was Director of Surgery between 2006 and 2014. He is currently Lead Clinician for Colorectal Surgery, joint Lead of the Peritoneal Tumour Service and a member of Pelvic Tumour Team. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the School of Medicine, University of Manchester, and Consultant Appointment Assessor at the Royal College of Surgeons.

He is actively involved in clinical research and has been published extensively. He is a regular contributor projects concerning colorectal and anal cancer, peritoneal tumours and post-operative adhesions. He is also a member of the SCAR panel, which is a national group focused on adhesion research.
