Heart Muscle Disease/Cardiomyopathy

Dr Isabelle Roussin is a Consultant Cardiologist specialized in imaging, echocardiography and CMR.

She covers all fields of general adult cardiology including hypertension and arrythmia with a special interest in valvular disease and cardiomyopathy. She is also an NHS Consultant cardiologist at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage.

She trained in France in non invasive cardiology including one year as a cardiologist in a surgical cardiothoracic team and cardiac transplant team which gives her a special insight in cardiac surgery, ( Team of Professor Carpentier, who invented mitral valve repair).

She arrived in the UK 20 years ago worked in different hospitals , including 2 years specialising in CMR with Pr Dudley Pennel at the Royal Brompton, and locum consultant in echocardiography for 5 years at the Royal Brompton with 2 years doing clinical research in cardiomyopathy induced chemotherapy.

She assesses all valvular disease from regular follow up to surgical indication including Consultation, Echocardiography, Stress echocardiography, Holter, to look for conduction disturbance in patient with aortic stenosis, or arrythmia in patient with mitral valve disease. This will include, when needed stress echocardiography, either exercise stress echo or Dobutamine stress echo.

At the Lister hospital Chelsea she provides a one stop clinic, patient having the same day consultation, ECG, echo, and when needed Holter and stress echo.

She has a special interest in Cardiomyopathy: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, post-partum cardiomyopathy. She works with the surgical and genetic team at the Royal Brompton Hospital. These patients need family screening and regular follow up.

All patients with cardiovascular risk factors or symptoms of ischemic heart disease are assessed with echo and stress echo and CT coronary angiogram to assess coronary anatomy in keeping with the guidelines to investigate chest pain. CTCA is easily available at the Lister.

Patients presenting with arrythmia as atrial fibrillation or flutter will be assessed treated, cardioverted when needed and sometimes referred for ablation.

She also assesses patients for insurance purposes or sport competition where they can have an echocardiogram to assess cardiac structure and for sport evaluation, a stress echo.

Dr Roussin is in the process of setting up a joint clinic with the gynaecologist, to assess women and cardiac disease especially around menopause time, focusing in prevention and early assessment and treatment. Women have been less looked after than men regarding ischemic heart disease, hypertension, cardiovascular risk factor as cardiac events were considered as less frequent. Menopause does not cause cardiovascular disease; however, certain risk factors increase around the time of menopause and a high-fat diet, smoking or other unhealthy habits begun earlier in life can have severe consequences and this is a rising concern.

Following her clinical research time working on Cardiomyopathy induced chemotherapy, Dr Roussin has been assessing women pre and post chemotherapy with more detailed echo to assess preclinical features of impaired systolic function in order to try to prevent LV dysfunction related to chemotherapy

Dr Roussin is available directly for any urgent appointment and query.
