Electrophysiology

Dr Wyn Davies is a consultant cardiologist who has long had an interest in the management of cardiac arrhythmias. He has been based at St Mary's and Hammersmith Hospitals in London where he established the department of cardiac electrophysiology. He has pioneered a number of new treatments, including the use of a robotic arm to carry out delicate procedures to eliminate heart rhythm disorders. He introduced non-contact mapping of cardiac arrhythmias into clinical practice for humans performing the first human studies and studied the Rhythmia heart rhythm mapping system which uses a whisk shaped probe, covered with electrodes, to enable fast and accurate measurement of a cardiac chamber in under 15 minutes.

Current research interests include mechanisms of causing clinical rhythm abnormalities, mapping and ablation of cardiac arrhythmias, new energy sources for catheter ablation and automatic arrhythmia recognition. Dr Davies is also the medical director for HCA's Harley Street Clinic, leading interactions with medical staff and the leadership team. He is the Chairman of HCA's pan London Cardio-thoracic and Vascular Department. He was the first President of the European Cardiac Arrhythmia Society and has been Honorary Treasurer of the British Cardiovascular Society. He has sat on or chaired numerous National and International Scientific and Advisory Boards.

He qualified in 1976 from Westminster Medical School and undertook post-graduate training at St Stephen's, Westminster, the London Chest, Guy's and St Bartholomew's Hospitals. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the Heart Rhythm Society and of the British Heart Rhythm Society.

It is important that HCA is transparent about our relationship with those doctors who provide us with clinical guidance on delivering the best possible care to patients and operating our hospitals safely and efficiently. We set out here some of the ways in which we work together and the amount we pay this doctor for such services.
