Professor Fares Haddad is a Hip and Knee Reconstructive Orthopaedic and Sports Surgeon at University College Hospitals. He is Divisional Clinical Director of Surgical Specialties at UCH, and Director of the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health at University College London.

Professor Haddad’s clinical and research endeavours have centred around hip and knee reconstruction, with interests in the expansion of knee and hip arthroscopic techniques to deal with sports injuries, new bearing surfaces and outcomes assessment in hip, knee and revision surgery. His work also encompasses novel strategies to manage patients with knee ligament and cartilage injuries. He provides medical input at elite level for dancers and a number of elite sports including football, athletics, rugby, boxing and martial arts. He was the musculoskeletal lead at the 2012 London Olympics and runs the IOC research centre at ISEH, in addition to being the chief medical officer for the NFL in the UK.

Graduating with a First-Class BSc and MB BS from the University College London Hospitals, Professor Haddad undertook his basic training in hip and knee surgery and reconstruction on the St Bartholomew’s, Royal Free and Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital rotations, and fellowship training in the United States and Canada. He was the gold medallist in the FRCS (Orth) exam and has gained a large number of prizes and prestigious academic awards. He has been an EFORT Travelling Fellow, British Hip Society Travelling Fellow and ABC Travelling Fellow in 2004. He became a Hunterian Professor in 2005.

He has presented and published widely (over 500 peer reviewed publications) on key aspects of hip, knee and sports surgery and continues to lead a clinical research group with interests in hip and knee joint preservation after injury, prosthetic design and performance and outcomes measurement after hip / knee surgery and sports injuries. He is editor in chief of the Bone and Joint Journal.

Mr Lewis graduated from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School London in 1994 having previously attained an honours degree at Bristol Polytechnic. He completed his basic surgical training at King’s College Hospital.

 He then started his orthopaedic training at the Academic unit of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore. He entered the specialist registrar training programme and completed this in 2006. During this time he had 12 months of Specialist training in pelvic and acetabular reconstruction surgery at St Georges Hospital.

He was appointed as a full time substantive Consultant with a Special Interest in Pelvic and Acetabular Reconstruction at Charing Cross Hospital in 2006. He now has an established regional tertiary referral practice receiving pelvic referrals and patients requiring complex revision hip reconstruction from all over North West London. On average this service receives in excess of 70 referrals per year since he started at Charing Cross Hospital.

His elective interest is in hip arthroplasty reconstruction both primary and revision. Charing Cross Hospital has recently become a division of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust with the unique status as the UK’s first Academic Health Science Centre. This has provided him with the opportunity to be involved with academic orthopaedic research. He is involved with some pioneering work on computer assisted navigation of reduction and stabilisation of pelvic and acetabular fractures and detailed mapping of the pelvis. 

This will dramatically improve the understanding of a bone which he believes possesses some of the most complex biomechanical properties of any bone in the body. He has been a member of the London Hip Unit since 2015 which has a collective ambition to provide high quality, accurate lower limb orthopaedic reconstruction.

Mr Malhotra has achieved multiple prizes throughout his career, including a prize for the best performance on simulation surgery and ‘Best Research Paper’. He also gained first prize for ‘Best International Research Paper’ by the European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) in 2018 for his work on gastrocnemius tightness, which he later presented at the BOFAS congress in 2019. In 2020, he was awarded the ‘Best Published Paper’ award by EFAS for his work on ankle syndesmosis and, in 2021, his work on the UK-FALCON national audit of COVID-19 in foot and ankle patient gained the ‘Chang Chen Best Paper award’ by BOFAS.

She undertook the National Fellowship in Children’s Orthopaedics at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the Royal  National Orthopaedic Hospital. She went onto a further Fellowship in Trauma and Limb Reconstruction at King’s College Hospital. She  began her consultant career at the Royal Free Hospital before taking a consultant appointment  at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
