Mr Chris Young qualified in 1980 from Sheffield University Medical School. His cardiothoracic training was undertaken at St Bartholomew's Hospital, St Thomas Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, and Queen Elizabeth in Birmingham. He undertook two years of research at the Rayne Institute, St Thomas' as a BHF Junior Research Fellow, being awarded an MD for studies in myocardial protection.

Mr Young's areas of specialist surgical expertise include all aspects of surgery of the aortic valve; including homograft insertion, aortic valve repair, and valve-sparing techniques, keyhole surgery, aortic root replacement, and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). St Thomas' has a large experience of this new valve technique and Mr Young is one of only two surgeons involved in the program. He has pioneered the introduction of TAVI at London Bridge Hospital.

His other area of specialist interest is in surgery for thoracic aortic aneurysm disease; including aortic dissection, aortic arch replacement, hybrid vascular procedures, and endovascular stenting. Chris monitors patients long-term in aortic surveillance clinics. Chris is the head of the thoracic aortic vascular program at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Mr Thomas Routledge attended medical schools at Cambridge and then Oxford Universities, where he won scholarships in medical science. Following this, his initial surgical education was in London, followed by five years at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, which is a national specialist training centre in chest surgery. He trained in both cardiac and thoracic surgery and was awarded medals by The Royal College of Surgeons for excellence as a trainee surgeon.

Pursuing a particular interest in treating cancers with surgery, Mr Routledge then studied for a year at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, one of the world’s acknowledged leaders in cancer operations. Here he learned a number of advanced techniques in treating lung cancer and mesothelioma, to bring back to my consultant practice in the UK.

After an Engineering degree, Mrs Karen Harrison-Phipps attended Southampton University Medical School. She trained in General Surgery and then Cardiothoracic Surgery in specialist units at Harefield, King's College, and Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals. She was the recipient of the McCormack medal for best performance in the 2003 National Cardiothoracic speciality examinations.

Mrs Harrison-Phipps completed her final year of thoracic training at the Mayo Clinic, USA one of the world's largest thoracic surgical practices. She learned state of the art surgical treatment for lung cancer, mesothelioma, mediastinal tumours, resection for pulmonary metastases and treatment of complex thoracic cancers such as chest wall resections. Their worldwide reputation led to the regular referral of patients with extremely complex thoracic problems such as broncho-pleural fistulae and oesophageal leaks. She also learned that with all thoracic surgery, excellent results and patient comfort and satisfaction are only possible with the correct team and attention to detail. She completed her USA experience at the Cedars Sinai Hospital, Los Angeles where she learned advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques for thoracic problems.
